(CNN)   Several Republican lawmakers were hoping Trump would save their ass for their role in the treason. Turns out they should've listened to everyone who has ever dealt with Trump   (cnn.com) divider line

Womp womp, traitors.

If Trump can't save his own ass, he's not saving any other politicians, no matter how hard they licked his boots. Lock them up.

Not going to lie, this warms my heart. True, he's a dumb sonofabiatch who always does what the last person he talks to tells him to do.  But if today passes with no (or severely shortened) pardon list I do believe I will have a drink or three to celebrate this evening.

2021-01-19 3:53:24 PM
I won't believe this until after 12PM eastern tomorrow.

He's going to write out his self-pardon on the back of an AF1 napkin and have some Air Force crewman witness it. Then he'll just put it in a safe at Mar-A-Lago.

2021-01-19 4:03:40 PM
We'll see if that holds.

Quit being so easily manipulated by all these poor, ugly, weak "lawyers," Donnie.  Self-pardon yourself and the rest of your damn family like you want to. You're the CEO and President of the United States of America for chrissakes. In 24 hours you'll be officially designated as a Free Person.  You will no longer be accountable to any laws of man or have to pay taxes (again), you won't need to get a Driver's License (for the first time), or worry about any other legal Jurisdiction or their stupid laws they force on you.

Forget Palm Beach money or NYC socialites. They can't help you. Only Sovereign Citizens can help you, now.

Do it.

I have my popcorn ready.

I am actually disappointed if Trump doesn't go through with the self pardon. It would perfectly fit a behavior pattern of trying to find some magic words that make all his problems go away, only for him to get angry at everyone else when it doesn't actually fix anything in the long term.

Must be suffering now.

All through his presidency, Trump believed 2 basic things: One that he could cruise to re-election via strong economy, and Two, that his pardoning power meant he could do whatever he liked without repercussions.

And now he knows he is deep in the shiat. What to do?

2021-01-19 4:26:38 PM
Pfff, they failed to save his presidency, what does he owe them?

I'll be disappointed if he does. If he does nothing for the next 20 or so hours - I win the prediction contest.

If you believe that most people continue on doing what they normally do until something forces them to change I would imagine he does nothing because that is mostly what he has done for 4 years.

Then when the charges hit he will be kicking himself that he didn't do something different.

Even if he issued a pardon, if they accept it's tantamount to admitting guilt and then they can be compelled to testify about any related investigation. Also creates an easy excuse to expel from Congress (if only Congress would be so willing)

Pardons are for Criminals.

I think you're going to be amazed. Traitors in Congress who sought pardons for their participation in an attempted coup have at least implied that they're guilty as hell, and must be punished harshly.

Right, I totally buy that Trump has finally decided to listen to his lawyers.

2021-01-19 4:36:17 PM
All Trump needed to hear was that pardoning those people might cause him legal problems.

If you think he sticking his neck out for you, you really haven't been paying attention.

Sorry, but you're wrong on both counts. Accepting a pardon does not mean admitting your guilty. It whirls negate the idea of pardoning innocent people who were wrongly convicted.

Even with a federal pardon, you're in legal jeopardy from state prosecution, so you can't be compelled to testify.

I suppose if you're in a position where you only violated federal laws and there were no state charges that could be filed against you, you could be compelled to testify. But IANAL, I don't know what, if any, alleged crime(s) would fit that scenario.

2021-01-19 4:38:33 PM
I'm skeptical.

TFA is basically asserting that Trump's hilariously cartoonish yellow-bellied cravenness is going to win over his ability to do the stupidest and most self-defeating possible thing.

I don't think anyone would disagree that Trump possesses both cowardice and stupidity in astounding abundance, but I find TFA's implied claim that they can predict which will win out when the two dictate different courses of action kinda unlikely.

RaptorLC: Right, I totally buy that Trump has finally decided to listen to his lawyers.

They told him that pardoning himself might actually make things worse for him. If it is too vague it is unenforceable. To avoid that it would have to detail crimes that he thinks he is getting away with. That's all he cares about. They convinced him that it was best FOR HIM. That's all it takes to make Dolt-45 do something.
because he can't have one.

Withholding the other pardons is just spite

2021-01-19 4:38:48 PM
They all told Trump he should not pardon himself, his family or any GOP lawmakers in a prospective manner unless he was prepared to list specific crimes.

So Mr. President, what crimes did you and your family commit?

I really thought we were going to have SCOTUS decide if pardon via Twitter was legally valid. Now that that's off the table, I would bet we will see if the dipshiat in chief saying "I pardon you" is valid, or if hastily written pardon notes are OK. I really expect him to double back on what his lawyers have said he should do and at least pardon himself and/or his kids, consequences be damned.  It's how he has run everything to this point.

2021-01-19 4:41:36 PM
Let's see who doubles down the hardest to take up the mantle of MAGA as Trump fades away into a mire of legal morass. Hawley seems to be sprinting out to an early lead but has yet to try plying his youth and skill against the old age and treachery of his party's more senior members. You know, the guys who grin ear to ear as they drown sacks of puppies like Josh.

General Patreus under a democratic administration handed over the highest level intelligence to his reporter GF along with codes, names of covert agents etc etc. Basically the highest intel in the country and lied about it when confronted by the FBI. And what was his punishment for doing so ?

misdemeanor and he still works in DC

And they had him dead to rights. So I hope you are correct but Im not holding my breath.

I understand the logic behind why it's a terrible idea, but can said lawyers explain it in such a fashion that a four year old would grasp the concept mid-tantrum and start behaving? That's the part I'm skeptical about.
