"hate crimes per capita" is probably a better indicator of which states charge people with hate crimes rather than which states commit them

Semi-related, but I heard NPR this morning note that here in St. Louis we lead the country in people killed by cops per capita for the past decade..  oh boy.

That seems really weird. I live in Alabama and consider this among the least angry places I've ever lived or visited. No car horns, and I can count on one hand the number of social confrontations I've ever seen in public.

Even going to NC or FL feels almost like NYC.

Looks like toxic internet comments did us in, since hate crimes are "NA" and our index score is 100.0?

Strangest ranking system I've ever seen. We're followed by Colorado? Yeahhhhh....sure.

Why is a photo of Annapolis MD next to the Pennsylvania blurb?

50 years ago, yeah. Once the law started cracking down on it, you'd be amazed how quickly things dropped off.

Places without a major, widespread history of racial violence are far more troubling because it always feels like it's just under the surface. Look at Wisconsin's recent history, for example.

Colorado has a ton of angry people.

I grew up in MS, went to college in TX, and then lived in UT before CO...and I feel that CO deserves that rank from a statewide standpoint.

Between the rural areas and their guns/god standpoint being thwarted by the more liberal urban areas and the super-wealthy all over the state who feel entitled to exclude the poors, CO has issues.

It's probably selective.  It's like the top panel - that is true everywhere in Virginia with the exception of goddamn 64 between Richmond and Newport News.

Having grown up in Oklahoma from age 5-15 i can honestly say i have no clue where they got those stats as the ate is littered with old racist assholes.    that said i can easily see hate crimes being way under reported/charged as such.

'toxic internet' is harder to quantify by exact location, considering that a lot of us have VPNs that can spoof where we are actually sitting.
