Ooh yum.  A restaurant we used to go to back in the days when you could go out to restaurants included fennel in their deep-fried calamari.  Mmmm.

No, but I will for  my ranch dipping sauce

Putting a fennel bulb on the grocery list.

I'm sure an instant pot can handle a bit of oil.

That's so sad. There are so many things you can do with fennel, yet this article is "well, it's either chopped in salad or battered & deeply fried..."

If you can't figure out what else to do with it, hell, just roast it. Roasted fennel is easy, brings out the flavor without drowning it in panko & oil, and pairs nicely with just about everything - you can roast it with other veggies, especially sweeter root veggies like carrots or parsnips.

Never had fennel bulb. Does it taste of licorice like the green parts of fennel? If so, I'm out.

I don't deep fry at home. That way lies madness.

The salt really brings out the salt's flavor.

/the sad thing is...
//first time I did that recipe if I was gonna make it?
///I'd season the farking salt and panko with a little salt and pepper
////really doubt I'd do it subsequent times, but time 1: I follow the directions unless they're actively suicidal

Truth. It's one entire kind of cooking I leave to kitchens I don't have to clean up.

/ Plus I'm too lazy to re-use the oil, especially since, for fark's sake, I don't want to deep fry every day, or even every week, so it's super wasteful.
// I mean obviously I do want to deep fry every day, who the fark doesn't, but I mustn't, because I'm pretending my other unhealthy eating habits are fine as long as I don't cross that particular bridge.
/// Also managing not to eat ice cream most weeks. Truly, I'm the picture of health.

yes and also yes. I used to be a big fan, but now I'm in a tired-of-it phase, raw cooked or otherwise. all of my various jackets' side pockets are filled with the dried raw seeds tho', I love to munch on the stuff (doesn't taste very strongly of rat aniseed, it's just pleasantly herbal-y?)

the wife is obsessed with these local Bao delivery joints, except every single damn bun-thing on the menu tastes way too strongly of fennel. bleh. I mean, I'll eat it, but I know there will be a sad taste of regret in mine mouf for hours afterwards.

eh, I've got the same issue with parsnips - I love them on paper in theory, and for 1 or 2 bites, but then it just confuses my tastebuds in a very bad way.

$mai_waifu and her parents: "...leeks? what... what are ...leeks?"
also $mai_waifu and her parents: *om nom nom nom* "but why didn't you make more??!?"

They are so awesome. They make fantastic onion rings too. Can't take credit for the idea though. All hail, Alton Brown for that one.
