So, owned by a guy who married a Russian, whose mother works for the Russian government, and now the site's hosted by Russians with all traffic routed through Russia.

It's amazing how all things trump seem to lead directly to Russia.

Remember to get back on Parler.  Follow these 3 tips:

1) Completely uninstall your Parler app and reinstall a new one from Google Play or Apple

2) look for instructions online to "root" your specific model of phone, follow these instructions and set the phone CPU overclocking to the maximum value.  Ignore warnings.  This will unlock additional features on Parler that require more processing power.

3) if you have any suspicion that bad players (e.g., Government) are monitoring your communications, reset/scramble your phone's encryption key.  The simplest way to do this without informing the government, is scrambling the encryption key is microwaving your phone for at least 2 minutes.  Do not microwave for longer that as it will start draining your battery.

Knock me over with a feather, etc.

I have zero hope that "patriots" will be angry or suspicious or even mildly miffed at this.

1:  They've proven themselves to be majorly in favor of Russian policy/interference/propaganda, and can think their way into triple-helixes about how this is "fake news", or "a smear campaign" against their benevolent FSB allies.

2:  If you're a patriot, you're not on parler.  You can say you are.  You might think you are.  But I can say and think I'm the goddamn president all day long and it's not going to make it any more truthful.

While not a universally-accepted distinction, most definitions of "patriotism" are rather at odds with parler's strong messaging towards and courting of the twin demographics of "outwardly violent and inwardly terrified traitors" and "piss-for-brains traitors".

I predicted/recommended this in an earlier thread. People have been saying for years that the US should just pull the plug on internet traffic from Russia, if even just for a little bit to show them what is at stake.

Alternatively, having all of the national security threats so easily identifiable has got to be really convenient.

Parler needs to rebrand itself if it wants to survive.

If the communications is going outside the US, the NSA can monitor it without the FISA court..
And if one of the other parties isn't in the US, it's fair game for the NSA..The protection for
not being monitored without a warrant aren't there when the data/voice etc.. aren't within the US anymore.

There is quite a difference. Russia has released the brutal grip on the Soviet satellite countries that was present for decades in the cold war. It still has security concerns especially for Russian citizens still present in these satellite countries, many Russian citizens were forced to move and live in many of the Soviet satellites countries, so to control the politics there and Russian citizen are now being treated horribly by the newly freed ex-Soviet countries. Putin puts his foot down very hard, these Russians had no choice and have been there for decades. Crimea is actually a Russian province that was given to Ukraine by Lenin in the early 1900s. The population there now is by far ethnically Russian, and the Russians want the warm water port back, in Crimea. The ethnic Ukrainians have be treating the majority ethnic Russians horribly, so Putin took back Crimea for military purposes, and to improve the lives of the Russians there. The same thing is happening in Eastern Ukraine and Putin is there to take care of the ethnic Russians. Other conflicts are occurring in similar situations in other old Soviet satellite countries and Putin is again there to protect the ethnic Russians living there. He is not empire building but protecting ethnic Russian citizens that are there through no fault of their own. We would do the same thing for our citizens as well.

I used the AWS cost calculator (used to be my day job).  Using their requirements and being VERY conservative, they were spending at AWS:

US$ 225K for bandwidth
US$ 353K for EC2 and storage
total - US$578K  per month

That's a modest sum compared to their larger customers, but that cash had to come from somewhere.

What's the ruble to dollar exchange rate??  (hmmm...)

42 million rubles per month.

Moving to in-RU hosting is saving them a metric buttload in exchange fees and keeping the cash in-country. The donors/ apparatchiks can just pay DDoS directly, that's if they aren't part owners and paying themselves.

No.  This makes it easier. No FISA needed, straight NSA job. Pretty much no legal constraints at all on collecting intel outside the US.

There *might* be a minimization requirement if it could be claimed that the traffic is 100% USPER to USPER, but that would be impossible to claim.

Trumptopia would be better situated in the lovely mountain towns just northeast of the Black Sea.  It's beautiful country, really.  A bit like the Southern Appalachians.

God's Country, for sure.
