UNC_Samurai: Also, there is no such thing as a humane method of execution.

There is but we haven't tried it. Tell the person their appeal succeeded and they aren't going to be executed after all, then when they least expect it, sniper takes them out with a clean headshot.

We could just put people to sleep, like we do with animals. Or assisted suicide. That's probably about as humane as we could possibly get.

Abolish the death penalty as the State should not kill its citizens.

Every prisoner sentenced to life without parole be afforded the right to suicide at any time. Big button on the wall. There are no guarantees in any human system. All you can do is let people choose what's right for them.

Should have waited until after the trials and sentencings of all the insurrectionists who came from Virginia.

Murkanen: PlasticMoby: I think this is just about the only thing i disagree with my fellow liberals on. After all the horror i've seen terrible people do to good people,i just can't get weepy over some piece of human garbage getting the needle.

The number of times that "terrible human garbage" turned out to be an innocent person who had upset the local police for being uppity should give you pause on that hot take.

And just how many times have innocent people been executed under the death sentence?

That we know of?  A considerable portion.

How many is enough for it to matter?  Because it's too many already.

So most of the people who've been executed in the US were proven innocent and killed anyway?

Do you get weepy over the innocent people who have been executed?

Really? That's an odd thought. Why were you thinking that?

If we're doing the "one is too many" thing, then we should empty all the prisons too since innocent people have been jailed and we can't take that risk anymore.

Innocent people can be released and compensated, though rarely well enough, for wrongful incarceration.  Dead people stay dead even when it's revealed they were convicted because of police malfeasance.

That straw man didn't stand a chance!

austerity101: The state shouldn't get to murder people.

I agree. The state should not have the power to mandate the giving or taking of life. That power and responsibility for doing so should lie solely with individuals, IMHO.

PlasticMoby: What about in a situation where the evidence is 100% solid? Where there's absolutely no doubt whatsoever?

It is still cheaper to have life in prison. And capital punishment is irreversible in any case.

You mean horrors like prosecutors and cops that railroad some innocent poor person of colour for a murder they didn't commit?

I am quite happy with the death penalty, if you can design a system that can guarantee no underserving person will get executed. Something that just isn't possible due to human failings that are part of any system.

Yeah, gotta agree with you on that point, especially in light of what happened at the capitol two weeks ago. I'm not saying that the death penalty should be used willy nilly, but there's always a set of crimes that even the biggest liberal will demand the needle for and wouldn't be able to administer it because of the fact that it was abolished.

What a tragedy that a country's collective bloodlust might be left unsated.

I support the death penalty in literally 0 cases. Yes, that includes Hitler, Stalin, Dahmer, Bellichek, Carter, etc. Never ever. The crime is immaterial. Don't project

Yeah, so you need revenge. Got it.

We need to abolish the death penalty.  It is state sanctioned murder.  I have no problem paying the taxes to run a modern ethical prison instead of that sentence

taintbaggins: Gonz: PlasticMoby: I think this is just about the only thing i disagree with my fellow liberals on.

I will sit here and tell you I'm against capital punishment, and I can cite legal reasons, financial reasons, practical reasons, and just straight reasons of humanity.

But let me read why a death row inmate was given that sentence, and I'll say "well, yeah, that sonofabiatch needs to die..."

The does not exist to punish the guilty.

The law exists to protect the innocent.

The death penalty does not protect the innocent.
