Every year on this date I always reflect on MLK.
But I also think about a local icon.
In 1923, Jack Trice was the only African American on the Iowa State football team.
That year they played at U of Minn. Trice wasn't allowed to stay with the rest of the team in the hotel or eat with them at the restaurant.
The night before he played he wrote this letter to himself.

"To whom it may concern: My thoughts just before the first real college game of my life. The honor of my race, family and self are at stake. Everyone is expecting me to do big things. I will! My whole body and soul are to be thrown recklessly about on the field tomorrow. Every time the ball is snapped I will be trying to do more than my part. On all defensive plays I must break thru the opponents line and stop the play in their territory. Beware of mass interference, fight low with your eyes open and toward the play. Roll block the interference. Watch out for cross bucks and reverse end runs. Be on your toes every minute if you expect to make good."

T
rice was abused all game, beaten and kicked. In the 3rd quarter he was hit really hard and stomped on multiple times at the end of a play. He has to leave the game.
The local hospital wouldn't treat him. He rode the train back to Ames and was planning on seeing a doc at home. He died on the train.

HIs teammates paid for funeral expenses, including the trip back to Ohio. They also bought a plaque and had it placed in the old gym.
He was forgotten for nearly 50 years.
In 1974 someone found that plaque and wrote bout it in the school paper.
It took nearly 20 years, but they named the football stadium after him. Jack Trice Statium.
The only Division 1 football stadium names after an African American.

Due to the game in 1923, ISU refused to play Minn for 66 years.

Longest post I've ever done on Fark.
I might need a nap now

So, apparently at this new school, I have complete freaking autonomy to teach whatever I want so long as I cover the standards for the marking period. There's no approved book list. There's no written curriculum. Just the standards.

It's like being one of the chained in Plato's Allegory of the Cave - I've removed the chains and am squinting hard in the sunlight, unsure of where to go. It's a strange feeling - being trusted to teach what I know. So, my juniors are doing "The American Dream", analyzing immigrant stories, songs about America through the last 100 years, and The Great Gatsby. When we finish Gatsby, we're going to read and connect it to A Raisin in the Sun and then dissect the American Dream as it stands today through the lenses of the novel and the play.

My seniors are going to do 1984. That's as far as I've gotten with them. LOL

I am like a farking kid in a candy store right now.

freddyV: 3 stores today. Saw bout 100 people. Only 1 chin bra. Nobody maskless.

I'm shocked.

Saw a woman maskless on a treadmill at the gym.  Not chin diaper, not uselessly off the nose, no mask at all.  Hell must have frozen over, because one of the gym staff actually enforced the rules against her and told her she had to wear a mask.

The most infuriating part wasn't her inconsiderate and potentially dangerous inconsideration.  After almost a full year of lockdowns and mask orders, she tried to pretend that she didn't know.  That's what got my blood boiling.  The f*cking nerve to act surprised and a bit offended to be asked to put her mask on

These people are f*cking insufferable.

In any case, I'm looking into weightless workouts and some equipment I can get cheap (being unemployed and all).  COVID isn't just "still going on", it's as bad as it's ever been you goddamn maskless morons, and it's still getting worse. Goddamn, what pieces of absolute sh*t.

Yes, they want things to get back to normal.  But to them, normal means not holding each other accountable and not really giving a f*ck about the average person.

I hereby demand that I be given a Fark account: the_innkeeper: https://blogs.nasa.gov/artemis/2021/01/19/green-run-update-data-and-inspections-indicate-core-stage-in-good-condition/

"During gimballing, the hydraulic system associated with the core stage's power unit for Engine 2, also known as engine E2056, exceeded the pre-set test limits that had been established. As they were programmed to do, the flight computers automatically ended the test.

The specific logic that stopped the test is unique to the ground test when the core stage is mounted in the B-2 test stand at Stennis. If this scenario occurred during a flight, the rocket would have continued to fly using the remaining CAPUs to power the thrust vector control systems for the engines."

I get being conservative, but if these values are expected in your test, shouldn't your limits be outside of them?

This does not give me a warm fuzzy about moving forward.

No, because you're in a test stand with structure all around, not in flight, so a gimbal move that's safe in flight is dangerous on a test stand. Also, if everything explodes, finding the reason for the fault is much harder than if you shut down as your faulting but before the RUD*.

This is also related to the fundamental rule of launches: Until T-0, any error halts, if you cannot halt, you abort. After T-0, you make DAMN SURE something's wrong before you abort, because cutting off thrust leads to bad outcomes, esp. right off the pad.

Very similar to the V1 rule in flight. Before V1, ANY alert and you abort takeoff. After V1, you takeoff and work it in the air because you don't have the runway to stop and what's beyond the runway breaks planes.

\ Rapid Unplanned Disassembly.

If you cannot fully test your gimbal on the ground, you have unsatisfied requirements.

Test Like You Fly.

If you can't get a full flight profile on the stand, you are missing data.

I attended tech school at Keesler AFB back in '72 and in the town of Gulfport was a restaurant (The Steak Pit) that served a 'blue plate special' sized porterhouse, cooked over an open flame of pecan wood. Came with a large baked potato with all the fixins and side of green beans & bacon bits or an ear of corn and rolls. Calories galore.

Our school shift was 5pm to midnight (sucked) but on Friday nights, five or six of us managed to get there before closing. Good eats.

Warnock and Ossoff won't be sworn until after Georgia has physically presented the Secretary of the Senate with a Certiificate signed by both Georgia's Gov and SoS.  The SoS is meeting tomorrow with the election board to go over the now certified county results, but the deadline for signatures isnt until Jan 22, so there might still be a few days for those two.

The president has continued to tell advisers and allies he really won the election, with less than 48 hours to go before he leaves office. On the current GOP rift, the president's anger is with every Republican who voted for impeachment but singular for McCarthy, aides say.

The next day and a half **probably** won't be as nuts as 1/6 was.  However - some crazy stuff - some of which we'll never now about - is going to go down.

I'm half holding my breath waiting to see what batsh*t crazy stunt Trump will pull to stay in office.

I'm guessing those plans are filed under "we won't hear about them until months afterward, if at all."

But to be honest - who the hell knows at this point.  In a sick way, it would almost be disappointing if this didn't end with something kinda nuts.

I still think Trump will say "The Storm is here" to trigger the Q-nuts into action.

I buy 1 megamillion and 1 powerball every play. With the jackpots this large (anything over 300M), though, I go get three more plays for each game that hasn't hit yet, where one of those plays is 01 02 03 04 05 and a quickpick for the mega number.

The "play every draw" tickets I buy with 8 advance plays, so they're good for a month. It's $40 a month, because it also includes the "super lotto plus" which is only a buck to play and has much smaller jackpots.

It's a simple amusement and cheaper than many other hobbies.

I wonder if the trumpsters are making a lot of noise around the capitol, and then will go do something nasty elsewhere.

Sarah Jessica Farker: I buy 1 megamillion and 1 powerball every play.

I don't understand why Iowa won't let you buy ahead of time.

Ever tried the clothespin trick?  If it works, it works.  If she's not too old.

And I am pretty sure that Team D2S has been trying like all hell to burn them all.

I read somewhere that they literally had to hire people to scotch tape everything he tore up because that's what he does.

I would hate to work for his "library."

I can't wait for a rainy day. We're supposed to get some good rain on Thursday. Trying to figure out a way to stay home and teach that day... LOL
