Sarah Jessica Farker: I buy 1 megamillion and 1 powerball every play. With the jackpots this large (anything over 300M), though, I go get three more plays for each game that hasn't hit yet, where one of those plays is 01 02 03 04 05 and a quickpick for the mega number.

The "play every draw" tickets I buy with 8 advance plays, so they're good for a month. It's $40 a month, because it also includes the "super lotto plus" which is only a buck to play and has much smaller jackpots.

It's a simple amusement and cheaper than many other hobbies.

I don't understand why Iowa won't let you buy ahead of time.

So, apparently at this new school, I have complete freaking autonomy to teach whatever I want so long as I cover the standards for the marking period. There's no approved book list. There's no written curriculum. Just the standards.

It's like being one of the chained in Plato's Allegory of the Cave - I've removed the chains and am squinting hard in the sunlight, unsure of where to go. It's a strange feeling - being trusted to teach what I know. So, my juniors are doing "The American Dream", analyzing immigrant stories, songs about America through the last 100 years, and The Great Gatsby. When we finish Gatsby, we're going to read and connect it to A Raisin in the Sun and then dissect the American Dream as it stands today through the lenses of the novel and the play.

My seniors are going to do 1984. That's as far as I've gotten with them. LOL

I am like a farking kid in a candy store right now.

RIGHT?!?!?! Part of me is wondering when the next shoe will drop, you know? Like, I'm going to put all this work into putting together a phenomenal unit and BAM! I now have to drop it and do someone else's shiatty worksheet packet. It's happened SOOOO many times before that I've become jaded. So far, I'm not seeing that here, but I am still really gun-shy about it.

And my Ph.D classes kicked off today, just in time for some (hopeful) normalcy comes back to this nation. I can't drop any classes this semester because they're both required. LOL

Every year on this date I always reflect on MLK.
But I also think about a local icon.
In 1923, Jack Trice was the only African American on the Iowa State football team.
That year they played at U of Minn. Trice wasn't allowed to stay with the rest of the team in the hotel or eat with them at the restaurant.
The night before he played he wrote this letter to himself.

"To whom it may concern: My thoughts just before the first real college game of my life. The honor of my race, family and self are at stake. Everyone is expecting me to do big things. I will! My whole body and soul are to be thrown recklessly about on the field tomorrow. Every time the ball is snapped I will be trying to do more than my part. On all defensive plays I must break thru the opponents line and stop the play in their territory. Beware of mass interference, fight low with your eyes open and toward the play. Roll block the interference. Watch out for cross bucks and reverse end runs. Be on your toes every minute if you expect to make good."

T
rice was abused all game, beaten and kicked. In the 3rd quarter he was hit really hard and stomped on multiple times at the end of a play. He has to leave the game.
The local hospital wouldn't treat him. He rode the train back to Ames and was planning on seeing a doc at home. He died on the train.

HIs teammates paid for funeral expenses, including the trip back to Ohio. They also bought a plaque and had it placed in the old gym.
He was forgotten for nearly 50 years.
In 1974 someone found that plaque and wrote bout it in the school paper.
It took nearly 20 years, but they named the football stadium after him. Jack Trice Statium.
The only Division 1 football stadium names after an African American.

Due to the game in 1923, ISU refused to play Minn for 66 years.

Longest post I've ever done on Fark.
I might need a nap now
