Agreed - it's already here & has been for a while. In typical Cdn fashion it is a lighter version but dangerous none the less. Reform Party, Preston Manning, Harper et al.

If anything, witnessing this circus led by the Clown-in-Chief has served as a warning for us. I'm hopeful we'll remember it down the road.

Our saving grace right now in Canada is that the conservative's keep picking lackluster jars of mayonnaise as their leaders.
The next conservative "darling" (Kenney) from my province of Alberta is proving himself to be quite the incompetent when it comes to actual governing.
He wanted to ride to PM being the voice railing against the federal government and their "evil" end of oil policies. COVID forced him to"lead" aow that he has shown how terrible of a leader he is he might not be around for the next provincial election. Especially if he has to enact a provincial sales tax to recover from COVID

Yeah I've met a few who have turned into a Qonspiracist. Stupid is never confined to one country and there were enough Canadians who just adored Harper. He emboldened the fringies and gave them oxygen. Including the religious right. There was a group of far right religious nuts who chunked flyers in our neighborhood about how Trudeau was a baby killer and hung an anti abortion sign on an overpass. All these 🍆managed to do was piss everybody off and cause a bylaw to be passed to stop them doing it again.

Once Harper was defeated they didn't just disappear. They've been sitting at home marinading in their hate and bitterness that they were so close to getting their Dominionists paradise. So yeah, they are still out there but nobody likes them.

I'm hopeful that Kenney has shot enough of his own dick off to lose his next election. And hopefully the Trump stank helps attenuate the cons support in the next federal election to keep the libs and NDP from splitting the effing vote again.

Here in Ontario, Ford's numbers are stupidly good...god I hate everyone.

I mean, i've been screaming about this for at least five years.

We don't care. Canadians are fairly arrogant too, thinking our post WW2 campaign of "They're just so darn nice!" actually meant anything. Plus, we can't be as dumb as Americans, right??

O'Toole, a military veteran from the Toronto area, won the party's leadership last August and has promised to expand its reach, in part by appealing to unionized workers and stating his support for reproductive and LGBTQ rights.

Trump did all this disingenuous pandering too. One thing to remember about conservatives everywhere: They hate people who are not rich, and will do everything in their power to transfer even more money away from average people, and whip up as much hatred as possible in order to retain power.

If you're a conservative leaning person, become a conservative Democrat or Liberal. The Conservative Party organizationally will always gravitate toward Trump/Hilter/Mussolini lies and un-democratic evil once it's clear their platform is only interested in institutionally hurting average citizens.

2021-01-18 12:42:12 PM
The Liberals have the NDP to take their far left crazies. Conservatives don't have anywhere for the crazies to go so they either split off to form their small parties or stay inside. Given that Sloan resoundingly lost his leadership bid I'd say comparing the Conservatives to Trumpers is nothing more than a cheap political shot.

Trump has never been popular in Canada.

Trump's pretty popular among Doug Ford acolytes, and Doug Ford is the premier of the nations largest province.  I spent a lot of time working in Ottawa the past few years and Trump is super popular among the conservatives there, and they like Trump for the same reason they like Ford: "He says what he means and does what he says" or some variation of that.  They both hail from the same version of populism that breeds the radicalization we've seen among conservatives in the US, even if Ford is more moderate that Trump(doesn't take much to be more moderate than Trump)

Hellllll no.  The crazy starts probably around Sudbury, ramps up approaching Winnipeg, levels off there for a bit, before ramping back up going west until you get close to Regina/Saskatoon, ebbs there, then ramps way up going west until you reach Medicine Hat / Sherwood Park, drops off some in the cities, ramps back up into BC, mutates into a BC only strain that slowly weakens as you get closer to the ocean.

It's kind of nice to see that the worm has turned from Quebec to the West.  We DO have some lunatics here in Quebec but they're mostly not right-wing.  Racist?  Yep.  But not really that right-wing.  They simply cannot enact rightwing policies here in Quebec unless it's a simple racist "punch down" policy (like the law prohibiting people in positions of power from wearing religious articles -- specifically this is anti-Muslim since it's mostly toward women wearing the hijab).

One thing about Quebec is that we cycle through our politicians fast.

I know that before Notley won a few years back that Alberta had 43 YEARS STRAIGHT of Conservative rule.  THAT kind of shiat ain't right.  At least here if a separatist government gets into power the separatist voters will still destroy them if they're ultimately shiat.  I'm looking at you, Pauline Marois.

Considering the Ukraine and Hungary are   run by nazis...

The right fills the gaps left open by the failures of bourgiois republicanism.

When you impose austerity on the working class but they see massive corporate and financial class profits and they feel they have no existing mechanism to change this reality, they go to the group that gives them answers. Even if the answer are evil and wrong.

Its human nature to put your stock in the individuals or institutions that claim to have a solution to your issues, especially when the alternative wants to pretend everything is working properly and that it is the fault of the poor and working class that they struggle.

Its the same issue we have here. Rush and Tucker tell people that its soros, globalism, libs and the left who have caused their problems. It gives them something to fight against.

What do the liberals say is the cause of their struggles? That they need to learn to code.

Its obvious which answer will inspire a greater following.

Basically, base 20-25% of the population are dumb-shiats.  In rural settings and central Canada it's higher.

It's a nation-wide thing outside of large cities though.  Anyone that just points to Alberta is either being disingenuous or has never lived in a rural setting.

The head of Canada's conservatives is planning to boost his ranks by

A. Breeding hate and discontent at minority's?
B. Infuse a message of victimhood on conservatives from everyone outside the party?
C. Hold massive, COVID rally's to appeal to the anti-masking/hoax believers?
D. Appeal to unionized workers and supporting reproductive & LGBTQ rights?

The answer is D... I know, right? Even Canada's "Bad guy" is 150 times better than 80% of ALL US politicans... Where'd I leave that passport...

As is comparing them to cogent, reasoning human beings with understanding of morality, but yet, here we are.

I live in Ontario, in a very old-white-man rural part in SE. As an immigrant, let me remain polite in my view of them;- marks in the pyramid scheme. Not even on first rung, wishing to once 'get there'. In short- ignorance is a virtue and money is god. It'd be funny if it wasn't so tragically impacted the well being of all of us.

Technically we are just jealous.

Almost no bugs on the coast...they have a coast, and mountains. Fishing in the morning, skiing in the afternoon.

Fairly warm weather unless you want to climb a mountain, so just a bit of snow shoveling unless you live up in the mountains.

Did I mention no bugs?
