King still hated by many radical leftists today, who despise his visions of equal opportunity for all, a colorblind world, and Christian redemption.  The people whk admire MLK today for what he actually said and did are now viewed as conservatives.  The idea that racial identity should not be a dominant, determinative factor in every part of our culture and daily life is anathema to them.

EyeballKid: LordJiro: EyeballKid: Wonder where this tab's usual denizens who are more devoted to 'order' than to justice; who prefer a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice are to comment on how King would be happy by a Biden presidency were he alive today.

I like to think that MLK Jr. was smart enough to realize that 'moderate' is preferable to 'fascist lunatic'.

Ahhhhh, there's that tranquilizing drug of gradualism!

I would have preferred Bernie, or even Warren, had I had the chance to vote for either of them.  I would also prefer that the poorer classes organize against the oligarchs; form unions, keep protesting, pull off a general strike, the whole works, because voting is only one tool in the toolbox and the others are, unfortunately, getting a little rusty.

People treating others like farking Trump supporters because they're hesitant to tear down someone who hasn't even done anything as President yet just because they don't completely conform to their politics isn't helping anyone.

And here's a guy who only got as far as the "I have a dream" speech.  Welcome!  We were waiting for you.  🤣

Were MLK alive today, he'd be accused of "purity tests" by the same white moderates he wrote about.

Stop deluding yourself.  He got on those people for saying that race issues should be dealt with later, that other issues have to come first.  Much like Fark's hard core left wingers, deal with the economics and everything else will just tickle down.  I notice that a majority of you guys were missing from the BLM threads.

sleze: Based on the polls, Trump is probably comparably hated now.  Does that mean in a few decades we will celebrate Trump Day?

Garbage day is a regular occurrence but it's not celebrated.

Does that mean that the U.S. will have Trump day in the future?

(No it does not.)

Dr. Martin Luthor King, Jr. made his "I Have a Dream Speech," at the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom.  Somehow, cons who want to co-opt Dr. King always forget the "Jobs" part of the March on Washington.

The government hated that he called for racial justice. They really hated that he called for economic justice.

Which is why Nixon was assassinated.

Yeah?  Take a poll right now, today.  You will find some 70 million people that are ready to shiat on his grave.  So, 1967 is just another day.

Seriously...  Here we are celebrating the legacy of Dr King, and what are we really celebrating?  If the last 4 years have shown us nothing else it's that, the things that Dr. King was fighting against are still here, still alive and well, and we have we not learned shiat.

The current situation is that we have 25,000 military guarding the legitimate government from the outgoing President's followers.  People were carried a Confederate flag through the capital.  People who were ready to start lynching Congress to get their way.

We really have nothing to celebrate right now.

It would've been fun to have message boards back then so that we could've seen all the folks talk about how his problem was just bad at messaging and should've considered better PR if he really wanted to help his point reach more people.

And nothing has changed in 56 years.

There is some hope. When Bernie Sanders ran in 2016, he was accused of being a socialists. "Well yeah" was his reply and he didn't try to change the subject or try to apologize. A lot of Americans accepted him and his economic and political views.

The vast majority of USA citizens have a knee jerk reaction when hearing the work "Socialism"

I honestly believe that most of them couldn't even tell you what the word means, they are just conditioned to hate.

Puppets.

King wasn't wrong.

The people on the far right (my aunt is one of them) think that there is this cabal of Hillary, Obama, Biden, Harris, and a host of other Democrats are communists in disguise and are ready to take down the country and enslave us all. It's mind boggling that they think this.

I actually got in an ill timed argument while thanking them for Xmas gifts they sent me. She was actually crying, scared for my children with "what is coming" and she said that everything in the media is wrong, and I am being duped and I am the one who is a sheep.

How do you argue with it?> I tried. I only spun myself up when I demanded this question be answered... "Did Obama take your guns?" He tried! "But did he actually take them?"

Denying COVID deaths, denying science. This is a woman who has a Master's degree in library science and she is so far down the rabbit hole I weep at the smart intelligent woman I lost from my life.

You're assuming that King is revered today. A reminder that to a good chunk of the South it's not MLK Day but Robert E. Lee day, and I suspect if you polling the folks in the Capitol on the 6th you'd get similar numbers.
