There was money to be made. Not small amounts, not even large amounts.  Humungous amounts of money was to be made.

But now the party is over, the adults are coming home soon and they're going to want to know why the house is on fire.

Why not?

Because of that sweet, sweet ad revenue.

Money. And lots of targeted advertising, which brought in more data, and more money.

Now? Support of open sedition is less of a money maker, and no one there wants Feds looking even harder at them.

On top of the fact that capitalism has enabled far-right radicals over the last couple of years, Jack Dorsey strikes me as the kind of lawful-stupid centrist that thinks political horseshoe theory means that both the left and the right are always equally bad, and that we should tolerate Nazis because communists are bad too, or whatever.

Then again, this is Fark, and around here, nobody ever RTFA.

She has also in recent weeks supported Trump's false claims relating to the results of the 2020 election, and she wore a mask that read "Trump won" on the House floor.

Twitter can EABODs.  Their rules enforcement is laughably bad; they'll let Boebert back onto her account after 12 hours AFTER she continues to peddle nonsense, AGONIZE about whether or not to give Trump a timeout for inciting a riot and coup to overthrow the damn country that left 5 DEAD, but they'll suspend my account (it appears INDEFINITELY) for calling someone a "dumb biatch who doesn't understand the white supremacists will use her as a concubine (due to her race/ethnic origin) if they got their way, so it was ludicrous to support their cause."   Reason:  "hateful conduct"

How farking stupid is that?  Jack Dorsey can get hit by a bus for his craven cash grab at the expense of lives and America's democracy being safe.  fark that guy.

Twitter should be looked at as an ":aider and abettor", perhaps even be subject to "accomplice liability" due to their absolutely ridiculous failure and promotion of Trump's lies about the election being "stolen", and their continued used of that nonsensical "these claims about the election are disputed" nonsense, which only fuels these morons to show up at state capitols and plan violence.  Jack needs his shiat pushed in for allowing this on his platform in the name of "well, he's a public figure and we don't have any liability for deliberately pushing to the top of our algorithm any posts that promote violence against public figures and allows us to monetize conspiracy theories that gets people hurt or killed."

Section 230 makes them non-liable for any of that.

I just browsed a few of those.  They're pretty generic, "we're great, we're being treated unfairly, Allah is great" tweets.

If conservatives want Twitter to ban people for conduct unrelated to Twitter's terms of service for a Tweet's content, they're REALLY going to regret opening that can of worms.

remember this?  https://www.npr.org/2020/12/16/947160910/the-case-against-facebook

I think donny and billy barr were holding this over facebook's head so to speak for the first three years of donny's administration... basically typical donny leverage move... he meets with his people and says what have we got that would make life very bad for zuckerberg?  then he meets with zuck and says, look, I love facebook, but some of my people say you're a monopoly and need to be broken up... I don't think that, but that's what they are saying... they say they want to bring this big lawsuit against you, but I told them we didn't need to bother with that just yet that we could hold off a little while.  I told them I had a great relationship with Mark facebook and he doesn't want this... bada bing, bada bang...

Step 1 : seize twitter and facebook
Step 2 : send zuckerberg and dorsey to jail for life for conspiracy against the US
Step 3 : make twitter and facebook non profit organisation and heavily regulated against propaganda/hate
Step 4 : winning

Kind of this.

Remember, it's all the calculus of capitalism, kids: a private company can choose to ban someone if they want to.

They can also choose not to.

Nah.  If the asshole had pulled it off, he'd still be on every one of those platforms.  They're only pulling back now because he's almost gone and his continuing to be a public peace of shiat would just be a daily reminder that they need some regulation.

NeoCortex42: austerity101: Hey, so maybe it's time to start breaking up some of these gigantic corporations, splitting up the too-big-to-fail banks, and taxing rich people heavily for the havoc and suffering they've wrought.

Okay, explain how to break up Twitter?  Do you make regional sites and tell users they can only socialize in their geographic area?

If the gov't can regulate EM waves, they can regulate twitter.  Regions are nothing more than political boundaries, i.e. defined by laws.  They aren't magical.  They aren't any more tangible than any other political boundary.

It you look at utilities for an example, you separate out distribution, storage, and generation.  Now you can break up the company by creating arbitrary boundaries like percentage of user-base.  "No one is allowed to control more than 20% of the user-base" gets you 5 user-management companies, which all access the same data.

Utilities were region based because utilities have a physical limitation that is region based.  You can't just send electricity and water infinite miles, there's a real cost to that.  But the water or electricity is the same stuff.

Twitter doesn't have the physical limitations of wires or tubes, but they have quantities that are measurable.

The gov't defines the quantities they regulate, and they literally make the rules by which things are quantified.  If there's a reasonable categorization and quantification, it can be regulated very easily.

Political regions are not natural kinds, they do not exist without a human being defining and interpreting them.

So break twitter up into the management of the user-base, and distribution of data. I believe they currently our-source access to the "fire-hose" as it is today, so the architecture already exists.

The 5 user-base companies all subscribe into the central data-distribution (aka a data clearing house), similar to how banks all buy into common insurance schemes (e.g. derivative clearing houses).

Sure it's all my hand in your pocket and your hand in my pocket, but there are now distinct companies, all doing the same thing, competing, and not allowed to hold more than 20% of the market.

It's completely contrived, as are all legal boundaries.  As long as it's measurable and quantifiable, it's easy.

The above wouldn't work as-is, it's just a sketch, since 5 companies not allowed to control more than 20% means no new users.  Having worked with banking regulations, I assure you the regulations are as arbitrary as the above in certain cases, including the single centralized clearing company owned by the institutions which are forced to use it.

The point is the framework is there to do it if they want to.  I personally don't care, i don't use twitter, so don't take this as an endorsement. It's just one possible way it could be done based on existing precedent.
