I predict an explosion of appellate opinions on spoliation of evidence and evidence tampering in civil and criminal cases related to the Trump administration.

Do we have time enough left in the world to charge this f*cker with every crime he's committed?

Yeah, that reminds me... Is Biden's DOJ going to subpoena that interpreter so we can finally learn more about Trump's cowardly treasonous whimpering at Putin's feet?

Joe Biden needs to have the spine to make the presidency Trump proof.

150 years from now, some doofus ought to discover the hard way that ripping up presidential documents automatically and irrevocably resigned him office.

I'm honestly not surprised by that practice.

I've done the same thing when working on large documents with several team members and going through multiple rounds of editing.  After you've made the edits, you tear the sheet up so that somebody doesn't pick it up and try to do the same thing on a later revision.

I could see that apply to people who only want to read something once, and tear it up afterwards so they aren't distracted by it.

Yeah, somehow I doubt Trump was meticulously pouring over multiple drafts of important documents. Just a hunch.

The act states that a president cannot destroy records until he seeks the advice of the national archivist and notifies Congress. But the law does not require him to heed the archivist's advice. It does not prevent the president from going ahead and destroying records.

We should f*cking fix that.

You think the tape patrol had it bad? Just wait until you hear from the staffers who had to fish documents out of the plugged toilet to preserve them.

It's not a serious crime, in the same way and chucking your litter all over the road is not a serious crime.
However, it is evidence (as if more were needed) that Trump is petty, narcissistic, destroys evidence of his own crimes and generally believes himself above all the rules - including those rules that apply to the President.

There are reasons the White House is required to preserve its records; it's not so 30 years later historians can reference what time the President was up working on a saturday - it's so that the servant of the people (the President) can be held accountable for things he does.

Every employer in the private sector can look at it's own records (email, work log etc) of what its employees were doing; you have no expectation of privacy at work. The President works for the American People. the same principle applies, yes some info is classified - that means that Congress can authorise someone to look at it on behalf of the people, but the President does not get to decide which documents are and are not kept.

Also, let's say, hypothetically, that Dumb Donnie of Orange gave Putin intel that cost American lives; something big - weapons designs, names of agents, the missile codes etc.
And let's say there's a record of that somewhere, I'd say destroying that record would be a very serious crime indeed.

Once he's gone the CIA, NSA, whoever needs to go through those records with a microscope, just to see how bad the damage to the country is as a result of his farkery.
