"Failed upwards"

Dude made a benign social media site enjoyed by millions, made tens to hundreds of millions early on in life, cashed out at the right time, and afaik isn't a world destroying emotionless sociopath. He won at life without having to destroy others.

Good on you, Tom. Enjoy your nature photography.

Yup, Tom got his money and went off to do something he loves.  He didn't just start an even more evil company than the first to make more billions, like most tech people would.

MySpace is bigger than Parler?

This is ... good? ... news.

(Yes, I assume they meant prior to this month)

Aaah, MySpace- when social media was actually fun and social.

Sure, it had its little quirks, and there were trolls, bit it wasn't quite the cesspool of poo flinging that most SM has become.

Until it was weaponized for marketing. It worked great too--we can't live without it now. This is a bigger shift than when automobiles came along. And it's going to shape us forever.

Not in a good way either. But oh well--you can't live without it. .

Funny you should say this. Not too long ago, Googles' motto/slogan was supposedly "Don't be Evil".  And then suddenly they stopped using that slogan.

The problem isn't with the platform but with the userbase

I feel like everyone bears some responsibility. It should be a symbiotic relationship, the platform should moderate the userbase, and the userbase should keep the platform in check.

They still use it. They merely tightened it up a bit by removing the first word.

Living within 1 mile of a major international Airport gets me the best Tinder matches.

No joke, I was matched with MySpace Tom. His profile was very interesting: He was 100% upfront about who he was, how rich he was, and what he was looking for in a match (ie smart and pretty temporary company).

Sadly he never replied to my message. Either he was just passing through LAX or he thought I was too ugly.

He's pretty darn average looking. Don't be too hard on yourself.
