Megachurch pastor - fraud is a given.  Convicted of it, that's rare.

Shouldn't ALL megachurch pastors be convicted of fraud?

The dupes: "Jeez if I'd just had more faith perhaps those historical Chinese bonds would have been recognized by the Commies."

In fairness, that had to be a hard sell. Props that he actually pulled it off.

Caldwell has a master's degree from the Wharton School of Business

Hmm, so it's a grifter factory.

Its not the Wharton trained con artist we wanted to see sent to prison most, but it's a start.

Caldwell, who in March pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud, was the senior pastor of Houston's Windsor Village United Methodist Church, which has about 14,000 members.

That's only 14 kilochurch.

That's low on the list of creepy megachurch pastor smiles. See any picture of Joel Osteen. And then there's Kenneth Copeland:

Tax churches investments, property not used specifically for worship (square footage of sanctuary), income not from donations.

Churches (Catholic, LDS, & sometimes little storefronts) often have major portfolios of businesses, apartment blocks, strip malls, etc. The massive homes of the pastors are not on the tax rolls, and neither are any of these, depriving communities of tax income needed for schools, hospitals, ... Charities like churches take money from programs for the poor. Tax 'em!

I was a little confused at first till I read he was pinched for stealing from the investor class. That makes sense as in America you can openly con vulnerable elderly people all day long, but when you go dipping into the pockets of the wealthy then the courts get involved.

"We're very disappointed that Mr. Caldwell's contributions to society and his extraordinary efforts to make every victim whole resulted in a sentence that is disappointing," LeBlanc said.

Giving the victims their own money back because he got caught does not make him a good man. Maybe someone should investigate this LeBlanc's finance.

Most large churches have liability policies to cover this problem, hence how the church was able to make everyone whole.

Any time you subject people to a large, often unregulated revenue stream there is a  temptation of skimming.

Taxation of the organization, while worth pursuing, will not solve basic human greed.

My wife's pastor biatches and moans constantly about how expensive jet fuel is and to make sure we select his transportation costs in the tithing app.  They have an ATM in the massive lobby.   My profile pic will give you an idea what kind of church it is.

Skim the money, pre-rinse launder and hide it, take your six years, get sent to a luxury rehabilitation camp and get out in two (after some friends "lobby" for you with their newfound wealth), go on a book writing and speaking tour to further launder the money you hid, and you earned a cool couple of million for a couple of years in a Republican country club camp.

Ya just gotta know which wheels to grease, and make sure none of the grease can be actually traced back to you.

All religious leaders are commiting fraud, by definition. The size of their congregation is irrelevant.

While I realize that burning churches, in the US at least, is historically a method to intimidate and harm black people, I nevertheless approve of the general concept.

Having read the Bible cover-to-cover and having had the Bible as half of my double-major in college (along with Accounting), I can tell you that there is nothing in the Bible that says that cleaning the pipes is wrong. The act of whacking off is not addressed at all, otherwise I'd be in serious trouble.  ;)

Also:

Many will say to Me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?' Then I will tell them plainly, 'I never knew you; depart from Me, you workers of lawlessness!'  -Matthew 7:23

Rest assured that these mega-church bastards are in for a rude awakening when it's time to meet their maker.

Warrior Kermit: Gulper Eel: > spiritual adviser to two U.S. presidents

Bush and Obama...

I added my original comment too soon!

WTF do presidents need with "spiritual advisors" anyway? They got most of the way up the ladder without them.

Chuck Colson was right. The advisors are there politically: to schmooze other religious leaders and get them all swoony about the majesty of the White House blah blah blah and all that happy horseshiat that they can bring back to their congregations.

And they're on the payroll? Yeah, fark that good and hard and thou shalt not get a reacharound.
