'If you vote against the world's worst criminal, we're leaving!'

What's the downside?

Hopefully, 2/3rds will leave if they vote to acquit.

Ok so 1/3 leaves and becomes extremists. Easy to single them out. They get few votes except the nuts. Probably never get elected. Big win there. 2/3 remain and either hide their extremism or are more moderate. Have hard time getting votes. Fight against Dems and Trumpers. Get less votes. Harder to get elected. Dems can strengthen and unify better and win more easily.

So the major problem with all this is what?

2021-01-16 7:00:08 AM
So he's saying if you pull Trump's crazy, fat ass from the neck of the bottle that is the Republican party, the most racist and bigoted Senators will pour out. Not seeing the downside, myself.

Maybe after that they can try to get back to the whole *loyal* opposition thing again.

...and the ones that started calling themselves "Independent" after trump turned the party into his own personality cult might just consider coming back once those idiots are all gone.

They're not going to convict.  I don't buy it for a second.  They'll come up with some bullshiat excuse.  I'll believe it when I see it.

Proving once again that Rand Paul only makes a stand when he knows it won't matter. When his opinion might matter he backs down. Even if it's about punishing a guy who tried to murder him.

And showing that Republican Senators in general are too gutless to impeach Trump. They just want to ignore Trump and hope people forget all about it in time for the midterms.

In reality, what are they gonna do? Vote for the commie lib?  They'll huff and puff and still pull the lever for the "R".

There will be all kinds of newly minted libertarians screaming at the top of their lungs that both sides are bad. Once again the Republican brand is toxic.

If the Senate were in session I'd be more worried. I don't think Mitch ever wanted this but he is happy. He thinks it will damage the Democrats more than the Republicans. Nancy can hold the articles until Schumer takes over. Let's present all the evidence and show what a real Senate trial looks like.

I said this on facebook about people who just "won't take any covid vaccine" regardless of evidence. I was put in timeout for 3 days, and I got messages from all sorts of people saying I was minimizing and aggrandizing suicide. We've almost eclipsed the number of US dead from covid that we had in all of WWII, but yea I'm the one minimizing deaths... I weep for this nation.

It doesn't really matter one way or the other.  The important part is that the Republicans and the Trumpers go to war, and do as much damage to each other as possible.

I'm sorry, were you supposed to be delivering bad news? All I heard was fantastic goddamn exciting news. Maybe the MAGAt filth should form their own party...we'll call it the "Dumpster Fire Party," and then all the Republicans who hate Trump can keep the Republican Party name. That way, they'll split the vote every two years, and the Democrats can hold power long enough to unfark this country from what the Republicans have done to it for 40 years.

Win-win for everyone. Democrats get a chance to right the ship, MAGAts can stick it to the party who they feel betrayed their orange God-King.

Rand Paul needs more neighbors.

Great.  Now they can go back to being the Ferengi instead of the Daleks.

You can reason with the Ferengi.  Show them how green energy can actually be more profitable than coal and they'll jump on board with it.  Show them how immigration actually helps the economy and they'll throw open the borders.  Show them how raising minimum wage ultimately helps business owners and they'll do it with only a small amount of grumbling.  You just have to sell your liberal ideas to them as being ultimately profitable somehow and you've won the debate.  That's why Eisenhower kept on doing what FDR had been doing before.  He didn't care if a Democrat came up with the idea.  It worked and the economy was doing great.  That's all he needed to know.  Carry on, then.

These Trumpers... they're just Daleks.  Convinced of their own genetic superiority to everyone else and incapable of feeling any emotion other than hate.  This is the price the GOP has paid, the karmic bill for trying to lure in the Bible-thumping bigots back during the Civil Rights Era.  Turns out those inbreds had their own agenda, one that Republicans had (mostly) fought against up to that point (see also "Abe Lincoln").  Now the Dalek agenda has overwritten their original one, and now Satan will take his loyal 1/3rd to the depths of Hell with him.

I say let Trump take his third and form his own wingnut party that quickly fades into political irrelevance.  The remaining 2/3rd of can then rejoin the Adults Table with the Democrats and rationally talk, rather than scream like spoiled children, about how they can compromise work together to really make this country great again.

Hopefully.

He's probably right, you know.

Considering the "Three R's" of Republican constituency:  the Rich, the Religious, and the... "mentally challenged" ('Murica Fark Yeah crowd.)

They'd lose a lot of the third group.  So he's probably right.

incendi: Maybe after that they can try to get back to the whole *loyal* opposition thing again.

I hated that phrase in the US. It makes sense in parliamentary systems, which have the government and the opposition. But in the US, the opposition party usually controls at least one part of the government -- meaning that the two parties usually have to work together.

But during Barack Obama's tenure, the Republicans use the "loyal opposition" phrase to block almost everything he wanted and pretty much paralyze the government. It's not the same thing.

The real secessionists are the lunatics, armed racists, miscreants, and opportunists backing both sides.   That's a lot of assholes.   It could work, especially with the money flowing in.

Note he says a third of Republicans - not elected Republicans. He's talking about your salt of the earth types. And they'll just become IndependentsTM as has been the trend for the last twenty years. 26% of affiliation, 50% of the electorate, per usual.

He didn't back down when it cane to using his government authority to punish a neighbor for kicking his ass in a fight he started.

Trump did a good job of identifying and pointing out the part of the GOP that are utterly reprehensible. They are the people whose opinions are so violent and vile that no one in good conscience should want their support.

Any worthwhile, respectable party would be proud to get such a cleansing.

Rand Paul: "I'm in it for the perks, and being a minority party means I gotta work for a living."

It's good to see his concern about picking a losing horse, after watching this wound fester for years, and keeping quiet because he's a Gottverdammt coward.
