I don't see the problem. It's harmless and if it helps her deal with the divorce, more power to her. At least until she runs out of tombstones to clean and starts killing people to provide her with a fresh supply.

The point of the tombstone is psychological, as is the entire religious burial ritual, and it all revolves trying to conjure up some mystical sense of immortality.  A way of defying death by leaving monuments to lives that were otherwise so ordinary and uneventful that they'd be immediately forgotten just like the billions upon billions of lives before ours.  And it is this fear of death and being forgotten that terrifies people into the comforting lies of religion or, in rare cases, motivates people to go out and do both great and terrible things so as to be remembered by history.  Of course for most humans the cheat code to longevity is to just pop out a few kids, shrug and claim that somehow their lives are now "complete."

Anyway, based on all that, what does psychology say about a person who faces trauma by cleaning tombstones?  My guess would be that they've been hit with a sense of impending doom in some way ("I'm gonna die alone!" or something like that) and they're manifesting that via trying to help preserve these little tokens of immortality.  In other words, a symbolic gesture to try and stave off being forgotten in death.

But of course I'm not a psychologist, I'm just a cynic, so my money is one my personal theory that she's really just getting people used to the idea of her hanging out in the graveyards that she's scouting out on the side.  That way when her ex-husband mysteriously goes missing no one will consider her lugging around canvass bags through a bunch of cemeteries to be suspicious, because she's already been doing that for a while.  Though they always seem smaller when she leaves for some reason...

No, the build up on tombstones is used to date them as after a couple of centuries the engraving can become impossible to read due to erosion. Tombstones tend to be made from softer rock as it is easier to carve and weather, pollution and cleaning make them difficult to read very quickly, in historical terms.

Neither does the subby it looks like.

Stone cleaning IS a hobby.

An incredibly boring hobby to most... but it is one. It's actually a profession.

Ever see on of those old marble buildings in Rome after a cleaning? Look it up. It's just a wee glimpse of what the world looked like before modern industry put a coating on everything.

Last year I was involved in relocating an old cemetery that contained nine graves. Only two of the stones were legible and only one had a date on it. It said, "Died: December 10, 1890. Aged about 66 years." The archaeologists we were using were more excited about the coffin nails they found than anything else.

Well in most cemeteries there's going to be at least one gravestone that was protected from the elements, or made of a tougher stone. Failing that you'll probably be able to determine an approximate age from the cemetery itself, church records, the language used, or the general style of the gravestone. I don't think any archaeologists are going to be losing any sleep over this lady.

Williams' viral videos take viewers on a time-elapsed cleansing journey in Bedford, Virginia's Longwood Cemetery.

Huh, I drove by that cemetery going to high school every day, and my sister's house is just up the street. Anyway, she's single guys.

I've spent a fair amount of time in cemeteries looking for previously forgotten ancestors.  It can be an interesting treasure hunt if you're into that kind of thing.

Had a high school buddy who did gravestone rubbings. You tape a sheet of paper over the stone and gently run a graphite stick over the sheet. Even worn stones will yield the inscriptions.

I'd agree, except that really good archeologists might take note of the actual dates inscribed on the tombstone instead of trying to date it through other less effective measures....

Meanwhile she can look at all the ways people died and think of her ex.  "Hmm, smallpox!"

I haven't visited my father's grave in a while - the graveyard's been around since the 1700s, way too many babies buried there, plus a friend of mine from college who was the daughter of one of my junior high teachers, who disappeared after music lessons one day; her body was found months later after spring thaw.
