...his resignation would become effective on Jan. 20th, which is the same date he would have been leaving office once President-elect Joe Biden is sworn in.

Why bother?

That's exactly the kind of servile cowardice pretending to be principles that I expect from a Republican.

Wow. I thought only Trump would have had the gall to take credit for creation of coronavirus vaccines, but Azar's doing it on his way out. That one sure came out of left field.

Because "oh yeah? You can't fire me - I quit!"

They're all obstinate 2nd-graders at heart.

I thought he died.

Sadly, that wasn't this dipshiat.

Whenever I saw a news story mentioning this Alex Azar I remembered all the times spent at Azar's Big Boys owned by the better Alex Azar. Having no better place to go, we would hang out there in high school days and after until we turned 21. After we were legal we returned but now after closing bars. We'd scarf down plates of food loaded up at the all-you-can-eat breakfast bar.

Sorry, but this won't help. The stank of Trump is all over you. Enjoy the rest of your life in political purgatory.

ModernLuddite: When Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar announced this week that the federal government would begin releasing coronavirus vaccine doses that had been held in reserve for second shots, no such reserve existed,

So, basically... "We were going to release all these doses we have in reserve... but the reserve doesn't exist... and I'm OUT!"

What a colossal asshole

This is yet another department that's been refusing to take part in the transition.  They just can't quit letting as many people die as possible, can they?

It's an Administration of ego and arrogance.

They can't stand letting someone come in and do their job better than them, when they don't even know what to do in the first place.

Because now he can cynically claim that his decision was a considered and principled one based on the depraved indifference of Trump and his concern for the welfare of others.

I thought the reserve they were referring to was the reserved second dose, which they originally were required to store for the same patient, but now can come from a future shipment to get more first doses out.

I suppose you think it would have helped the vaccines develop faster if he hadn't created the programme and given money and/or guaranteed orders to the pharmaceutical companies?

"Everything the Trump admin does is bad, even if it is good."

On the 20th he's going to disappear. It'll be like a miracle. Much like the disappearance of the vaccine reserve. They'll both just go away.

That's how it was explained. But if his "reserve" is already empty:
1) did it even exist at all? Or was this some miscommunication about how to count actual vaccine doses?
2) if it did exist, where the hell did it go?

My understanding is that it's bad reporting to even talk about a national reserve, it's always been intended to be rolling orders. Before the FDA required providers to treat people and save their second dose, so if no one was doing that anyway, the original guidance wasn't well communicated. Big surprise.

By the way, I am wrong in that Pfizer at least says that they do currently haveall the second doses available for the people who haven't received them and are starting to ship those, they just weren't ready for the change and it's taking a while.

To be able to claim he "took a stand" later.

Trump is shiat, but it's the slimy opportunistic edge-cases like Azar that really gall me. He'll be back in some form, weaseling his way forward.

Because some of them believe that by resigning, it will look like they wanted nothing to do with Trump, while waiting until the last day of the term shows a kind of employable loyalty that politicians love. The mere act of calling it a resignation from the Trump administration opens the doors for jobs with other republicans or as a consultant.
