In America, being a white man has long meant that you can say just about whatever you want to law enforcement and they'll believe you. These people never expected consequences. Hopefully we change that trend and justice is done with this asshole and all of his friends.

Just keep talking. 'Splain it to us, like we were children, son. Explain your motives, your reasons, how the events shaped up, who you were with, did they encourage you? Did you encourage them with their own personal missions? Just keep talking, son.

When I was a kid I remember "writing" on paper, mimicking my father who was writing correspondence. I asked him if I was writing and he said that it looked like writing but we agreed it was just scribbles that looked like writing. I remember my curiosity that his writing was words and mine was scribbles, and I wondered how he could tell.

I've remembered that as a quaint story but also a metaphor my entire life.

That vibe is strong with these guys, they're saying words and sentences, and they even have "ideas" that they're describing. But it makes no sense, it's scribbles, and they don't get why their words are scribbles and our words are not. Their words have always been taken as sensible in the past...or at least people let them think that.

Cargo-cult mentality. They have no idea what things mean, and assume that the legal system is as much alchemy to everyone else as it is to them. So they chant what they believe are the correct legal incantations and are perpetually baffled as to why it doesn't work.

Again, many of these people are mentally ill. That's not an excuse, nor should it really be a mitigating factor. Just sayin'. They're goddam nutjobs.

Acknowledging that isn't letting them off the hooks, it's facing what we're up against.

They're not just in for the lulz. The true believers are mentally ill. Whatever mental illness that causes people to reject observable reality out of hand and act on obviously make-believe conspiracy bullshiat on the intertubes.

Obviously, there's a LOT of overlap with the people who are simply farking stupid. Many of these people are stupid AND mentally ill.

Yes, but, also, at least he won't be stuck with this client long. At this rate, it's going to be a fairly short trial.

Might be able to use the insanity defense.

I really hope a lot of these guys seriously try to pursue the defense of "No I totally wasn't threatening violence or being violent in any way.  I simply believe [insert Q nonsense or other anti-liberal diatribe here], and because of that I think that [person] should not continue to possess the quality of being alive.  My actions were only to bring about that goal for justice, but it's clearly not violent"

/assuming the courts don't side with them and convict on only misdemeanors.

We need universal health care, including mental health care. Plus dental and vision, too, but especially mental health care. We need to address the issue and destroy the stigma. It's ok to be mentally ill and get help, just like if you sprain your ankle and need therapy on that, for which there is no stigma attached.

If these people had been getting the help they needed years ago it would have never come to this.

This is an excellent description of how these peoples minds work. They can't fathom that something they don't understand can be intelligible to anyone else. That's why they are so easy to lead into conspiracies like covid being fake.

Being insane is not the insanity defense.  The insanity defense is being unable to comprehend your actions.  "I wanted to kill them because they were trying to make people's lives better" is not defendable, because you are well aware you are trying to kill people, even if your reasons are whackadoodle.  The insanity defense would be something like "I thought firing a gun through their face was a way to cleanse their chakras", or "I didn't realize guns hurt people", or "I was so out of it, I didn't realize I had a gun in my hand".  Screaming "By the power of Orangeskull!!!" before you shoot someone gets you a date with the big humming chair.

I have a similar story to that: On the mantle in the dining room was this ornate piece of crystal that I thought was very pretty. I remember being outside playing and finding a shard of glass in the street, and I took it home and put it on the mantle beside the crystal, because they were both shiny and pretty.

My mom saw it and after giving me the "oh you sweet summer child" look, tossed the glass into the trash and explained to me that her crystal was cut from a special type of gem (I forget what, probably cubic zirconia), but mine was just a piece of broken glass and was worthless. I wondered how she could tell the difference. They both looked shiny and pretty to me. How can anyone tell crystal from glass?

I imagine that we all have childhood stories like that -- little dunning-kruger moments where we think everyone else thinks just like us. It's actually a tell-tale sign of early adolescence, this inability to perceive of a world outside our own cognition, and of other minds that are not extensions of our own, with experiences and knowledge that differs from ours.

Most people eventually grow out of this state, of course. Most people.

These false claims provide cover for actual child traffickers.  Some friends of mine who have gotten divorced were accused by their spouses of molesting their children, to gain advantage in court.  This messes up the kids, ruins the accused's lives, and gives cover to actual molesters.

A thousand Q-morons all saying "I was answering the call of the President" is going to work just awesome for Trump in his impeachment trial. I mean, one person saying "The President was sending messages to me through the electrodes the aliens planted in my brain" is just some guy who needs a rubber room, but a thousand people attacking the capitol because the President said "Give 'em hell" is going to be a tough defense.
