There is a very long history of shall we say somewhat misleading box art in video game packaging going back to the Atari 2600 era at least which had art depicting the games with in that was far beyond what the primative tech of the day could hope to render.

Lots of pc games would post in game screenshots that machines at the time had no chance of achieving, or had stuff that was removed from the final game.

That one never failed to confuse me when I'd spot it at Blockbuster or Bob Bardash.

Story there was that that design was deliberate and I can see why.  The game itself was forgettable; the box art is the only thing anyone remembers about it.

I thought the article and the thread were gonna be a bunch of screen caps next to cover art...maybe I will be the change I want to see in this thread. brb

The putting of a good ol boy strumming on a banjo in the box art of that game has always confused the hell out of me.

Yeah, by that point Amano's work was more of a suggestion. Nomura was the rising star, he with the fetish for zippers and belts.

Eh, Amano's art was never followed all that closely.  If the character portraits were any indication, the guy had a major thing for albinism.  The "super-pale with white hair" look sort of worked for Cecil, but Butz and Galuf clearly didn't look like Amano's depictions, and Tina/Terra looked way more distinct with green hair than she would have with white/silver.

When set on rebound shots, nothing was better than getting a 5-bounce shot to hit and knocking your little brothers tank through a wall.

Correct on all three.

If you miss Destruction Derby 2, check out WreckFest. It's everything you imagined DD2 would evolve into, with regular (free) monthly event updates now.

There's a spiritual successor to WipeOut in development on PC as well. I can't recall the name currently, but do believe it's in early access on Steam.

I still dig the soundtrack to both DD2 and WO-XL.

It got Loops of Fury by The Chemical Brothers in mine, so I had to look it up.

Song still holds up well.
