"Shame, shame on the ten Republicans who joined with @SpeakerPelosi & the House Democrats in impeaching President Trump yesterday," Graham said on Twitter. "After all that he has done for our country, you would turn your back & betray him so quickly? What was done yesterday only further divides our nation."

Good deeds to not obviate a crime.

And I'm not sold on the good deeds to begin with.

By 2030 fully 1/3 of America will be non-religious. The evangelicals are bleeding membership the most. Only 8% of millennials and 3% of post-millennials identity as evangelical. The evangelicals became scamvangelicals. They backed Trump as godly and had churches do things like this and
post signs like this:

So, evangelicals went all in on hate and division. They proved themselves once and for all that charity, compassion and goodness has nothing to do with them. So yeah, people are turned off to them in droves.

We have all had enough of them. 400 years of this. The pilgrims, it turns out, were the extremists whom England sai "leave or die" and they came over and promptly picked on other religious groups, persecuted and hanged them. Salem was the final straw after a century of this sort of nonsense.

This is the end cap for them. They rolled the dice in a final grasp for power and came up snake eyes. I believe thst Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett will find their power neutered. The evangelicals tried to gaslight the country by declaring the porn star loving, herpes infected, serial rapist and career criminal Trump a godly man.

They lost entire swaths of people and three generations doing so. I predict that if current trends continue the evangelicals will capture maybe 1% of the coronnials. (Born 2020 and on)

That's not a movement any more. It's a cult.

I hope the skeletons in his closet are as entertaining as the ones Falwell had.

Franklin Graham has tied  his family brand with the Trump one so while this does disgust me it does not surprise me.

Let's hope both get dragged down by this ludicrous heresy.

And to think people funny my posts when I point out that conservatives have been indoctrinated since birth to believe this crap.

Also a shiatload of people at Jonestown did NOT want to drink the flavor-aide, and only did so because they would be shot.

"Baby Doc" Graham could have just kept his mouth shut, but I guess every treason weasel has to make sure they get noticed.

I deal with a lot of evangelicals in my job. Some are more intense than others. Some far more relaxed. A surprising number are liberal, and an unsurprising number are conservative.

Not a single one of any of the ones I've dealt with, even the ones that make pilgrimages to Billy Graham's place, his library, or the bench he sat on to tie his shoe one day back in 1992, none of them like Franklin Graham. They all hate him. He's an arrogant, spoiled little shiat. And that's coming from someone who had to babysit him when he was a kid.

If it wasn't for his last name he'd have farking nothing. I'm not surprised he loves Trump. If Trump wasn't riding off his dad's success he'd be nothing too.

And they know this. Trump was their final hurrah. That's why Franklin Graham is on the side of the insurrectionists. He wanted Trump to become Emperor For Life.

You know how we've been quibbling about what constitutes "terrorism" ever since the insurrection last Wednesday?

Saying that the most powerful being in the universe will wreak the worst possible violence upon you if you don't capitulate and do what they say sure sounds like using threats against a group to bring about social objectives.

It may not qualify as "terrorism," per se, because it's legal to threaten people with hell as long as you don't actually take action to send them there, but "make people afraid of violence so they'll do what you want" has been standard operating procedure since the beginning.

He sat in the corner watching while someone else tried their hand at terrorism.

One big part of the modern "Evangelical" movement was it's origins as splinter movements to mainstream protestant churches.  Many of these churches sprang up independent of any governing board of authority to the extent that each of these churches are more of a reflection of their pastor than scripture.

In the free market of religious outlets, these new churches, free of tradition - sold their parishioners exactly what they wanted to hear.  "Don't feel bad about ignoring the poor, your wealth is proof of God's love", "Jesus founded America so his people could have guns", "Trump is the embodiment of Godly virtues".  In short, an easy gospel that exalts their customers selfishness without putting any demands on them beyond filling the collection plate.

It's a profitable racket, where Christianity has been boiled down to "I'm 'Murican, white, and exchange gifts at Christmas"  to create a tax-free religious belief system for a racial/cultural/political movement.

I have been saying for a long time that the gods these people worship is an abusive psychopath. And double standards apply. If you're a white heterosexual male you can kill an entire country of people but if you "accept Jesus as your saviour, all is forgiven. But if you're a POC, no such luck. You were born to live under the jackboot. If you're a gay, you're destined for that soul containment centre and if you're a woman, you will never be equal because some fictional woman ate a piece of fruit.

It's sick as hell. No wonder they love Trump. He matches the personality they worship.

I've been thinking about it, and I think a lot of us don't realize how lucky we are that things came into place to get us where we are. It is entirely possible, based on the current political climate, to imagine a scenario where:

- Mitch McConnell could just as easily have decided to join the Republicans refusing to vote yes on certification. With 50 + 1 votes in the senate (including Pence), he could conceivably have convinced the entire Senate Republican caucus to go along with the vote. At that point, the election could have come down to the state delegations in the House of Representatives, which despite the Democrats controlling the House, would have gone to Trump.

- Mike Pence could have given in to pressure from Trump and other Republicans to interfere with the certification. Observers have noted that's probably not legitimate under the law, but hey, when has that stopped Republicans before, especially in the last 4 years. We'd then be stuck in Republican dominated courts for weeks or months. Maybe you'd have the GOP majority on the court refuse to get involved citing the political question doctrine. Then where would we be?

- The fascist mob could have taken hostages or killed several Democratic legislators and by the use of force coerced a vote to aid Trump.

I think we came very, very close to a literal coup in favor of Trump last week. And then where would we be? Would we send sternly worded letters to our congressional representatives about literally stealing an election?  Give in and accept that we live in a dictatorship now?

I hate Mitch McConnell and Mike Pence and most current Republican legislators, but things could have been much, MUCH worse. God bless the National Guard, the Secret Service, and everyone protecting Congress and the inauguration next week.  They've got a big job ahead of them.

Astorix: I have been saying for a long time that the gods these people worship is an abusive psychopath.

Hard to argue against that. It also kind of takes the wind out their sails when they want to talk about all of the nice things they believe about "love:" If someone says lots of beautiful things about love and forgiveness and acceptance, but also tells his wife he'll do far worse than just kill her if she ever tries to leave, would you say that his message is really all about love?

2021-01-15 1:40:40 PM
Judas actually made the bigger sacrifice in that situation. It can be argued that he actually had no choice in that situation but to betray jesus so as to fulfill the whole chain of events, and afterwards killed himself because of it, ensuring that he'd go to hell for eternity while jesus only did so for 3 days.

That is, if you buy that any of that story actually happened.

I wouldn't worry.  The current office-holders will eventually be replaced entirely by wild-eyed fanatics, separatist lunatics, white nationalists and people who make Piltdown Man* look like one of the quiz kids, and then the only ones who will be terrified for their families will be their political opposition and the people who vote for them.  And, y'know, the rest of the planet, since neo-Trumpers will look sane by comparison and most every nation on the planet will regard us as Charles Manson with nukes.
