The only cartoons close are those by Gahan Wilson.

Mr. Gary Larson, is exceptionally adept at condensing the vapid human condition into a single frame of reference

Like most sane human beings I love the far side but there will always be a place in my heart for the original Addams comics

Maybe the greatest single-panel cartoon, but not even close to Calvin and Hobbes or Bloom County. Heck, even Foxtrot was pretty good.

It was always on the first page of the Saturday comics section with Calvin & Hobbes and played a vital part in shaping my funny bone as a kid. There's something to be said for getting it all done in one panel.
Herman was great at that too:

thefarside.com has become a standard morning ritual for me. I'm amazed at how many I had forgotten.

Some forgotten, some I'm certain I never saw in the original run.

Yeah, if you missed it, he is doodling again on his website. Mostly old stuff but there are a few new ones.

If you're into the whole RSS thing, here's a feed I found for Larson's re-launched thefarside.com.

While we're at it, here's one for Calvin & Hobbes too.

Also love me some Pearls Before Swine.

Does Cyanide and Happiness count?

Larson is great, but there's also Piraro's Bizarro.

I used to have the Midvale School one on a mug. It was my most favorite mug, but it somehow got lost in a move 15 years ago. :(

I do remember the occasional letters of outrage about the Far Side during the 80s. Cancelling subscriptions to the paper. In a one newspaper town. Long before the internet.

I imagine those people were very happy when FOXNews came along to entertain them.

Am I dumb for not realizing why all the samurai would want to chop up the chicken?  I assume that's what the short lived spectacle would be?  Do samurai hate chickens, or balloons?  Why am I not getting this one?

I went to a conference in Anchorage about the same time we were going through a security audit with an auditor who just really seemed to have it for us (or just liked making excuses to visit Amy, our lead sysadmin). So I picked her up a print of this

And although he does have some gems in there, I don't know that he'd crack my top 5.  (Far Side, Calvin and Hobbes, Liberty Meadows, ... then a whole bunch of possible contenders)
