Funnily enough, the market value of firms like Twitter and Facebook is about as imaginary as the value of bitcoin.

Worth it.

Facebook's market value has been dropping since late December, and Twitter's has been dropping since mid-December, but sure, let's blame it on them dropping Trump.

What happens to their market cap in case of civil war? Just pondering.

I recently listened to an interview with Elon Musk.

First question out of the gate: "So, how much ARE you worth?"

His answer (to paraphrase) was "I don't really know. I have market shares but that isn't the same as money"

Market value isn't imaginary but neither is it some secure treasure, either.

How much would it have dropped if they hadn't?

I'd think the value of social media outlets would increase after they stopped spreading lies. Apparently I was wrong; stock owners must like companies that allow rampant spread of fraudulent information.

Yeah and a good 80% of the right wing terrorists that left in a huff will be back seeking to get attention and grift once Trump is a corpse. So whatever.

How the f*ck is Facebook worth $247 a share?

Meh. Rich people's problems.

That's okay. Trump, Twitter, and Facebook can all fark themselves.

Sure they're seditious white supremacists and all, but they create a lot of value for shareholders. Isn't that what America is all about?

And, there, folks is the answer to why they let him stay for so long.  And it's also the answer for why those platforms have been used as a propaganda machine for all this time.

You can hold that against them all you want.  They won't give a shiat.  And they will do their best to find the next cash cow that delivers such a steady income stream.

Market Cap / # of outstanding shares == stock price

Not every company has the same # of outstanding shares, hence stock price is not (on its own) an indicator of really anything.

I really wonder when the big players are going to wake up to this. Or maybe they know and figure it's worth it just to have presence?

There was that article here the other day about how uber figured out most of their ad spend was just going to scam networks. They reduced their spending by half and saw no difference in efficacy.

I have turned down so many proposals for online advertising for my museum, from legitimate advertisers who also do ongoing printed ads.  Simply because of Adblocker.  Visitor guides on paper are very popular for tourists.  Online ads, who even sees online ads?  It saves a lot each year and stretches our lodgers' tax grant.

Twitter hit highs in December it hadn't seen since early 2014, Facebook is still sitting higher than it was in 2018 after a long steady climb that had nothing to do with Trump. This is a bump in the road so unless you were planning on cashing out the entire nest egg in the middle of a pandemic you'll be fine as soon Biden gets in office and the traitors adequately punished. If nothing else the banishment of fringe nazi friendly sites such as parler will help both FB and Twitter once right wingers move to re-establish themselves as reasonable people (good luck with that).

The people dumb enough to buy from the targeted ads before considering anything are mostly conspiracy nutjobs that see tshirt ads and click. When the nutbars leave, the ad space makes less money.

remember, the users are the product, not the customer, in social media.

Great, just great. Now Trump will claim he's worth 54 billion.

Heh ... Wish.com is literally raking in billions from people who think $20 dSLRs and 10" vibrating dildos are good purchases. Online advertising is entirely effective at a rate you would shudder to realize. Then add in all those rebranded plastic widgets, flashlights, lasers and Facebook marketplace, and just regular ads that are so pervasive and inherent to the experience, you don't realize you're buying that brand toilet paper or paper towels because you now have name recognition to a product you didn't before.

Wait.  So we simultaneously stopped the lies from Trump AND reduced the power of Mega corporations and the obscenely rich?  Sounds like a win-win to me.

Trump isn't even in the top twenty of Twitter posters.

Obama is at the top, and that was as of a couple of weeks ago.

Some wealthy cultist is playing with the market.
