I don't know if this was it, but his first interview wasn't in 1985.

Who sang backup on Prince's first album?
Everyone knows it's Ghandi.

There was a guy who did a documentary about Prince a while ago. He was a reporter from some paper in the Minneapolis St. Paul area in the late 70's and early 80's. He did a series of interviews with Prince shortly after Controversy came out. He said that the first interview was him driving around Minneapolis with Prince just talking and flipping through radio channels when they came across a sports show that was talking about the Twins. He said the next 2 hours of the interview was just them talking about the Twins.

The guy was a musical genius but also batshiat crazy in his older days. Joining the Jehovah's Witnesses cult sure didn't help.

Seemed like a lot of women loved him but imagine what a first date would be like.
"So you get to travel all over the world, that must be exciting."
"Yeah."
"What was your most memorable performance?"
"I don't know."
"Okay, um... what are you thinking of ordering?"
"Crackers...maybe an apple juice."
"Cool."

His "mysterious" or whatever persona he called it and displayed was an act. And it probably prevented him from wider success in his early days. But 1999 and Purple Rain were just so damn good that it hardly mattered at that point. He dropped this

Yea, it was an act. Not how he was in personal life, just for public consumption.

I'm so ADD, if someone asked me a bunch of 5-part questions like that, in a dead quiet room surrounded by people all staring at me... I'm not sure I could even answer. After listening to the second question I began imaging myself sweating and replying, "I'm sorry can you repeat the question"
