Robin Vos continues his uninterrupted record of being a gigantic asshole in power only due to extreme partisan gerrymandering, and only capable of policies that stigit to "the other side" - which happens to be the majority of the state he supposedly represents.

A lot of working-class people used to vote for Democrats, and then Democrats stopped supporting them, turning away from labor and toward corporatism.  And then the Republicans swooped in with lies and racism.  I think our only chance of even remotely reaching them is to make their lives better.  Economic stress makes people assholes, and they start looking for people besides themselves to blame.  The blame lies with the government, but they're happy to blame Blacks, or Muslims, or "socialists" or what have you.  If Democrats could actually champion the working class again, that would help, I think.

The new deal benefited the Democratic party politically for a long time. A new new deal would help them politically.

It's a fact.  It's not a FUN fact.

/Wisconsin is just ridiculous with their gerrymandering.  Pretty sure they still have a veto-proof majority despite their being a majority democrat voting base.  It's insane.

The Democrats should just dump some liquid ass into all the committee rooms every time and see how long the GOP maintains that everyone has to be there...

But the working class are Republicans. How are you going to square that with hating republicans and not wanting to work with traitors?

Now you know why the republicans damn well fought against & pulled every trick they knew to sabotage a progressive economic recovery in 2008. They saw Democrats replacing republicans for an entire generation.

Hey now. We're the ones that got inundated with Koch Bros money.  No other states were subjected to that kind of moneyed influence, yet we're steadily digging ourselves out.

Meanwhile, what is Iowa's excuse? Make an example of those re*ards first.

I have to drive up to Appleton for week at work (usually but not this past year) and it takes a distinct turn once you hit the back half of Washington County.  Especially the billboard that ask what Jesus would think of pornography interspersed with porn store ads.

I hear ya, but this is not just an economic issue. There are complex cultural factors too.  And I have heard your argument a number of times. I'm not sure it's that simple.  But I'm not asking about long term solutions to the problems of our current economic system and the society it has created. The question is, for the next decade or so, how do we we get people to stop voting for coonts?

My basic question wasn't about policy, but politics. There are  Too many crazies running the country. They need to GO.  What is it about these clowns  that get them elected? And why does it resonate with voters?

The Midwest votes Red because they know if Democrats run the country, black trans will be allowed to teach kindergarten. After which there is a 1 in 10 chance that, 10 years later, their son might take another boy to prom. To them, America has never been about freedom to grow and change into something new. America is just a nostalgic abstraction of their happiest memories. To them, any America that looks different than that won't be America anymore. At which point they will be happy to put it down like Old Yeller. The first half of their Bible commands it and promises to deliver the nation into enemy hands if the faithful hesitate to murder the unfaithful. So either way, the nation is doomed. The important thing for those who see no place for themselves in the future is where they go when they die.

So the answer to your question "How do we stop them from voting for idiots?" is either:
  (1) Kill all the gays.
                 or
  (2) Burn all the Bibles.
Sedition starts with the Old Testament. Cut it out at the root.

I'm not sure it's that simple. I look at where I grew up, which was solidly blue-collar, union, and Democrat. The Dems big shift away from labor, at least at the local level, didn't happen until the union-supporting Dems watched all the union members vote for Reagan twice.

Second, it's not all about economic anxiety. Where I grew up is in trouble. But now I live in a neighborhood of 250,000-300,000 homes (in exurban Columbus, where that's real money). Probably 60-70% Trumper, based on the yard signs. They're professional class, white collar managers, and/or small business owners. They've been radicalized since the late 60s to think that anyone that's either liberal or not white is out to destroy their way of life. That was done so the wealthy wing of the Republican party could get them to vote against their own interests.

Their lives, in general, got better during the Clinton and Obama administrations, yet they're the two most hated presidents both around here and where I grew up.

Now you could help the folks back where I grew up and you still might not win their hearts. And I don't don't WTF you do about the guy who flies the Trump flag from his 70k pickup truck.

I wonder. If, eventually, people and businesses leave Wisconsin, because it might be better to do business in a place with decent governance, will that suck the life out of pure Republican obstructionism? Kansas went full derp for a while. Is the pendulum swinging back slowly in the other direction?

Or is this time in America simply giving Business a lesson on how much they can bankrupt America and Americans before they have to pull back and give us another crumb?

The small town have been screwed for decades.  We're a northern state that's not right to work.  The only think holding my hometown of 4000 together is the 94 runs past it and there's two state prisons nearby.  Otherwise Milwaukee's trying to be something other than a manufacturing city and Madison is trying to recover UW's reputation from Scott Walker's budget cuts but it's slow going.
