I agree the movie is ridiculous. Don't care, love it anyway.

Sometimes ridiculous might even vaccinate reality against it. Like, you just know Bezos has considered hooking a dolphin up to the internet for a new AWS offering, and a lackey probably had to deliver the bad news.

Yeah, but I wish things like Christian White and his Aryan Reggae Band hadn't been quite so farking prophetic about the types of cretin we're still dealing with in the first half of the 21st Century.

One thing it got wrong.  In all dystopian movies, there is throbbing techno music.  Johnny Mnemonic and the Matrix are two examples.  In reality, dystopia is filled with "Gloria" and "YMCA". and instead of attractive people in pleather it involves ugly people like Don Jr.

There is no techno music in either of those movies.

Yes, it's truly accurate.  How do I know? Because I've had it.  I've had it with all of this.

I want ROOM SERVICE! I want the club sandwich, I want the cold Mexican beer, I want the $10,000 a night hooker!

Jeeze, did you even watch the movie?

Common bottlenose dolphin
The common bottlenose dolphin or Atlantic bottlenose dolphin is the most well-known species of the family Delphinidae. The common bottlenose dolphin is the most familiar dolphin species due to the wide exposure it receives in captivity in marine parks and dolphinaria, and in movies and television programs.
Mass: 330 - 1,400 lbs (Adult)

I stand corrected.

My friend and I had a years-long argument about whether or not Jones was actually a literal dolphin.
Then the movie came out, and I was vindicated!

What I remember most about that movie is that at one point, Henry Rollins was killed, crushed by a burning VW Bug.  I really enjoyed that.

I honestly love this movie. It's up there with The Fifth Element in terms of cheese, and I honestly think we don't get enough cyberpunk. I want more, damnit.

Well, ackshually, that's not REAL techno music.

I don't know how/if they are related but I played the Philips CD-ROM game called Burn Cycle before seeing Johnny Mnemonic, the movie seemed strangely familiar.

Burn Cycle was pretty impressive for 1994 if it was mostly an interactive movie.

Rollins got crucified, but his van did get squashed.

There are some good parts to the movie. Takeshi Kitano is a good filmmaker. Brother is a really good movie that made in the USA years later.

I enjoyed it. Saw it opening night with 6 other people in the theater.
Not horrible, not great. Probably about as close as you are going to get in tone to a 80s William Gibson story.

/2020s? Too soon. Forgot about that part of the movie. Don't think a date was ever stated in the novella.
//Neuromancer is explicitly stated to occur several hundred years in the future.

Lol normally I find that kind music pedantry annoying but Ishkur definitely gets a pass.

Nope. No time stamp in Neuromancer, either.

Neuromancer doesn't state a year, but it explicitly implies when, in a vague way.

I loved it. As I watched it, it reminded me of Shadowrun without the fantasy elements. It was a non-Shadowrun Shadowrun movie.

/goes back to play Cyberpunk 2077 tonight.

So...you're trying to say it was a Cyberpunk 2020, movie?

I would agree.

/have both games on the shelves behind me
//also have Demon City Shinjuku (the anime seen in the movie) on VHS
///don't have a copy of Johnny Mnemonic, but I should rectify that

Got the first edition of that, as well as all the supplements.

I just re-watched it over the holidays and had a good laugh about the date coming up next week. It was terrible, and yet for most of the movie I actually stayed awake. I had even forgotten about some of the starring roles in that flick.

That rant sounded like it was either written by or directly stolen from Denis Leary.
