Watching Cop del Rey matches earlier this week and now Im really into these cup matches, I had no idea what I was missing. The smaller clubs come ready to play and are fun to watch.

Covid is messing with a lot of the games. Southampton's trip to Shrewsbury is off as the shrews don't have enough players.

Derby are having to do what Aston Villa did last night and field the reserves. (The competition rules say as long as you have enough fit and uninfected players you play, even if those guys would never make the first team)

I actually get to watch my team, Forest, play today on BT. They're playing Cardiff so I hope we give them a sound thrashing.

2021-01-09 7:03:19 AM
Also this season there are no replays, all the games go straight to extra time and penalties.

2021-01-09 7:05:25 AM
Sweet finish from Taylor and Forest already have the lead... mwahahaha.

Everton take the lead with a goal from Tosun.

Cardiff's tactic against forest seems to be 'foul the forwards until they can't play anymore'.

Handbags at Forest as a Cardiff player lunges in late, drawing blood. Ref quickly defuses it.

Im honestly shocked they are playing these considering BoJo put the country into lockdown

Bread and circuses, probably hoping this will help distract from the massive incompetence of his government.

Elsewhere, non league Chorley have the lead against the Derby county reserves. Heh.

Alas, you are correct

Luton and Millwall now both lead in their ties.

Each goal flash post on the bbc text feed has a thumbs up / thumbs down option.

Amusingly the only one so far with far more thumbs down than up is the Millwall goal.

This is the kind of photo you only get on third round day.

Non league ground? Check.
Snow? Check.
Dubious 'snack shack'? Check.

I know I'm just an ignorant Yank who has only been watching English Football since PBS showed weekly games in the late '70s, but how the hell do you take the lead in a tie!?!?!?  Game, match, fixture, replay?  I get all those but Tie?
/fantastic game
//ludicrous commentary

2021-01-09 8:04:29 AM
Heh, 'tie' is a word we use to refer to a match in a knockout contest as opposed to one that's in the league.

From the oed:

BRITISH
a sports match between two or more players or teams in which the winners proceed to the next round of the competition.
"Swindon Town have won themselves a third round tie against Oldham"

2021-01-09 8:14:58 AM
Rotherham level, and more than deserved

2021-01-09 8:16:33 AM
Cardiff dominating the possession now, Forest starting to park the bus. That's not wise, even with the utterly dreadful attempts on goal Cardiff have had so far.

Yep. For those of you reading in American, a match is a tie and a tie is a draw.

And a draw will lead to penalties, which are not the same as fouls.

It's all very simple really. Now ask me to do cricket

Lot of changes for Everton as they chase the game.

2021-01-09 8:41:28 AM
Rotherham Utd's shirt sponsors are getting their money's worth. Nice exposure, Hughie Construction

2021-01-09 8:44:45 AM
Cardiff still making most of the chances, but every time they get to the final ball they fluff it.

Some clinical finishing and this game would already be long over, Forest just can't get out.

Everton get one against the run of play. Dammit

And VAR rules it out by the length of Cenk Tosun's haircut

2021-01-09 8:49:35 AM
I still think this situation where some cup games have VAR and others don't is somewhat unfair.

Make a decision, either every game has it or none do.

Daniel Boone's Farm: Watching Cop del Rey matches earlier this week and now Im really into these cup matches, I had no idea what I was missing. The smaller clubs come ready to play and are fun to watch.

This week showed that last year's giant-killings were no fluke. Atlético got knocked out by a Segunda B! That'd be like if last year's Liverpool got knocked out by Burton Albion.

Celta de Vigo got smashed 5-2 by Ibiza as well. That team was founded in 2015.

2021-01-09 8:55:13 AM
Norwich comfortably into the next round, Everton v Rotherham going to extra time.

2021-01-09 8:57:13 AM
Forest somehow hang on to that early goal and beat Cardiff. No idea how, we were dire from about the 20th minute on.

They were doing it for the common good.

2021-01-09 9:00:02 AM
Chorley get a second, 5 minutes to play there for Derby to try and save themselves.

I'm going to flip over and watch the extra time in the Everton game now...

For the next block of games not sure if Stoke v Leicester is going to be entertaining or not...

2021-01-09 9:02:16 AM
Everton score almost at the beginning of extra time... still a long time to go yet though.

2021-01-09 9:02:26 AM
Winter storm wreaking havoc in La Liga. Athletic Bilbao won't be able to face their Madrid fan club, as the field is buried in snow.

2021-01-09 9:05:08 AM
I know it won't happen, but the thought of Jose pulling a Simeone and managing to lose 1-0 with a near-full-strength squad makes me chuckle.

2021-01-09 9:07:26 AM
Rotherham have run out of steam. Valiant performance, regardless.

2021-01-09 9:10:44 AM
So Forest through and both Derby and Cardiff out. If Millwall hadn't won it would've been a perfect start to the day...

2021-01-09 9:14:44 AM
This lot all start on the hour:

Blackburn Rovers v Doncaster Rovers
Blackpool v West Brom
Bristol Rovers v Sheffield United
Burnley v Milton Keynes Dons
Exeter City v Sheffield Wednesday
Oldham Athletic v Bournemouth
Queens Park Rangers v Fulham
Stevenage v Swansea City
Stoke City v Leicester City
Wycombe Wanderers v Preston North End

Stoke v Leicester is the 'glamour' pairing, but remember that Sheffield United don't have a win yet this season...

I haven't yet checked what ESPN+ is offering, but seeing Sheffield Utd go out to Bristol Rovers would be funny. Practically speaking, Sheffield Utd really don't need the distraction of another cup game, mind you.

Such disrespect for old power Preston North End. Harrumph.

If I won the lottery, one of my fantasy projects would be to buy a team like PNE and restore them to their former glory.

2021-01-09 9:44:26 AM
Vardy dropped entirely for today's game, injured apparently, cause otherwise Leicester have gone with a strong 11.

2021-01-09 9:46:56 AM
I can't decide which match to watch

2021-01-09 9:56:02 AM
I'm going to start at Stoke v Leicester but if any clownshoes gets going I'll shift. Fa cup weeks are the few weeks where I can actually hop around all the games cause they're split between BBC and BT.

2021-01-09 9:58:32 AM
Oldham v Bournemouth has been moved to Bournemouth because Oldham's pitch is frozen.

Normally that would be a postponement, but with no fans in and no replays, both teams agreed to just play the damn game.

Atleti vs Atletico has been postponed by heavy snow in Madrid.
Apparently Atletico couldn't even fly into Madrid.

By all accounts, the dive that led to Wycombe's penalty would make Neymar blush.

Sevilla score a 4th minute goal to take the lead.
And as I type that Diego Carlos scores an own goal to tie the game up.
1-1

2021-01-09 10:22:10 AM
And now in the 7th minute Sevilla take the lead back.
Just terrible defending.
2-1
