Yes it was.  Violence and intimidation with a political end.

shastacola: But...but...it was Antifa !

Last I saw from people who monitor such things, the MAGA-heads can't decide whether or not the rioters in the Capitol were brave American Patriots fighting for America or violent Antifa false-flag infiltrators making patriots look violent and bad.

I suspect we may even be seeing the next evolution in Trumpian doublethink, where both of those things may be true at any given moment depending on which is more advantageous in the current argument.

Terrorism?  Eh.  Violence and intimidation for political gain can even apply to straight-out war.  After all, terrorism is part of asymmetrical warfare.

If we're going to put a finer point on it, this was an insurrection, and should be treated as such.

/that, and "terrorism" is a term that's so overused these days, so let's use a word with more punch

Fascist coup. That's the phrase you are looking for.

If they win, they are MAGA. If they lose, they are Antifa. In a nation where only winners matter, they can't grasp that they lost. Neither can he. It must be a conspiracy as a result.

No shiat.  A violent insurrection with guns and bombs. Perpetrators should have been killed.  Since they weren't, they can be tried and either hanged or put in prison for life.  All representatives who support them lose their seats and get executed.

Stupid question. Are these things not called terrorism because insurance won't cover it if they do?

I know it sounds kinda dumb, but I've dealt with insurance companies before and words really matter to them.

2021-01-07 10:32:38 AM
My exact phrasing yesterday was, "It's a slight breach in etiquette to combine Krystallnacht with the Reichstag Fire, but okay."

"Terrorism" works as a term, but I think "attempted fascist takeover" fits better. On the other hand, if it lets us skip an endless semantics debate and go straight to doing something about it, I'd be happy to call it "Pon Farr".

Don't ever back down on that when talking to Republican office holders and officials. They'll try to deflect or equivocate, but literally call them terrorists sympathizers. People like Ron Johnson, Scott Walker, Glen Grothman, Robin Vos, Scott Fitzgerald, are all people who helped foment the environment that led to this terrorist act. They should all be castigated and, where applicable, removed from office. Those who backed the false claims of election fraud should be tried for insurrection directly, and sent to federal prison.

I was shocked and saddened by 9/11.
I was shocked and saddened by yesterday.

Time to clean house, this is terrorism, and the perpetrators need to be brought to justice, or this will get worse.

It's not really new doublethink for them, they've always held contradictory views. To them, anyone committing a crime yesterday was false-flag antifa, the people that didn't storm the Capitol building were the Real American Patriots™.

You know?  In that movie "Olympus has Fallen" all the SS guys pour out with guns blazing and hold off the terrorists snipers and garbage truck machine guns?  Kind of expected that yesterday.  Yeah.  I know how the scene ended but they had machine gun garbage trucks!

Got an a--hole with a confederate flag walking through the nations capitol.

Apparently the Republicans ARE Antifa.

I mean, they are the ones who are always talking about Antifa. They threw a giant demonstration yesterday and they said only Antifa showed up.

If you want to stop Antifa, stop the Republican party.

They saw that there were no ramifications for their similar actions in Michigan and Ohio, where they were able to storm the capital buildings there with no arrests or negative effects, this was just hte next logical step.

the boot HAS to be put down here, or what's the next step - invading the White House itself?

Why not two Kristallnachten?   The traditional first one, around Election/Guy Fawkes Day and the second, around Electoral College Ceremony day/Epiphany.

The Epiphany story is that three Magi (astronomers, kings, magicians) came from the mysterious east (Persia) and told the king (Herod) that he would be replaced by a greater king according to the stars.  He went berserk, killing all the children of a certain age just on hearing an ambiguous prophesy.

I've often thought that the concept of "truth" is probably completely confusing to Trump and his crowd of sphinctremuffins:

"You said X yesterday.  X was false"
[Long blank look]  "It suited my purpose at the time to say it."
"But the next day you said Y, which was also untrue, but completely contradictory to X."
[Long blank look]  "Is this a trick question?  It suited my purpose at the time.  What don't you understand?"

The lack of security around the Capitol building when the opponent are right-wing fascists is appaling.

Apparently all you need to do is make Trumpy noises at the cops, and they'll only stop you at the barricades momentarily to take a selfie.

The next fascist leader, who will be more evil and cunning than our current one, will storm the Capitol building with fireteams and assault weapons.

It's multiple things.  The people taking over the capitol building to disrupt he vote and burn the EC paperwork are insurrectionists.  The people leaving IEDs at strategic locations and/or threatening to kidnap, hang, or kill people are terrorists.  People tearing down flags and trashing equipment are rioters.  People carrying off material and stealing are looters.  People standing outside of barricades chanting (not threatening) and holding signs are protestors.

Many people involved with this are several of the above.

Only 13 people were arrested.
I hope.  I pray.  The FBI has thousands of pictures.  They will know who every terrorist is.
I hope.  I pray.  There will be arrests.  There will be trials.
I hope.  I pray.  The number will be in the hundreds.  Thousands.
I hope.  I pray.

Numbers I saw updated this morning say 53 arrests.  Still painfully low, but certainly more.

Osama bin Laden didn't fly a single plane into a building, but we held him responsible for the people he directed and inspired.  Trump is the leader of a terror cell, there is no way around it.

Six firearms and two pipe bombs were recovered, as was a cooler of molotov cocktails. Yeah, this was a pre-planned terrorist action. These were insurrectionists and they need to be prosecuted as such.

Without question--yes, terrorism.
But, my disgust is with all enablers (i.e. Congress, trump voters (especially the ones in 2020), BSAB "journalists"/media, those who don't vote at all, Capitol police who did nothing, etc.) applauding weak elected officials who were on board with this coward for over 4 years, then FINALLY 'having a backbone' while the smoke is still clearing?

No. F*ck no. You can't have a pass for pouring gas on a dry wood pile for four f*cking years and somehow NOW have feigned political outrage when your sh*tty leader you've defended the entire time hands out matches to the hilljack thugs. Censure isn't enough.

2021-01-07 10:47:32 AM
We should order a quarantine of all the insurrectionists that participated yesterday.  This is a serious problem in the middle of the pandemic.  Force them under quarantine for two weeks.

Then charge them charge them with treason.
