errrr....Gen Z.

I'm already catching sounding very old man-y: mentioning what I wish I'd known when I was younger, telling myself things like "don't despise a few years" when I start thinking about my life timetable, giving a one-minute backstory as part of my answer when a student asks a question, and acknowledging that 20-somethings aren't fun to drink with anymore.

I'm either going to be entirely insufferable when I'm actually old, or I'm going to get it out of my system now. Really not sure which.

This never would have happened under Trump. Thanks, Biden!

Most demographers define Millennials as being born between 1981 and 1996. Some do 1980 to 1995. Some do 1981 to 2000. I haven't heard of one that starts it in 1986, but it's a silly and arbitrary grouping to begin with.

I was born between 80 and 84.

Not sure if I'm a millennial or Gen X. I've also heard the term Xennial to describe the awkward sub-generation that I'm in where we didn't grow up with cell phones and a modern internet, but it all kind of came along while we were in middle/highschool.

Thanks for getting all the advantages in life and making sure we wouldn't have the same opportunities as your generation was lucky enough to have. The biggest gripe I have with the boomers is that they just WON'T ADMIT IT!!! Like they have a collective and selective amnesia and are willfully trying to downplay their role in America's current demise. I call them the sellout generation. The ideals that they espoused in the 60's about peace, love, civil rights, and progressive policies were all traded in during the 80's and 90's for the " Fark You, I've got mine" mentality that has infected way too many people.
JUST ADMIT IT!

1981 to 2000?  That's ridiculous.  I was born in 1984 and my SO was born in 1995, and the that's already enough distance to create the beginnings of a generation gap.  He couldn't figure out why the 2007 Boston Mooninite bomb scare freaked people out so hard and was skeptical that it had anything to do with the aftereffects of 9/11.  Without significant memories of it, he can only understand intellectually how we're still being affected by the seismic fault line that tore open that day.

Why not just make every generation 30 years long at this rate?  Or 10?  Technology is  transforming our lives and cultures so rapidly it's an increasingly meaningless distinction.

being around many of them teaching at a college, I would just say the extremes are more pronounced.

every generation has entrepreneurs.  Previous ones that were successful came from means.  Now with social media, self-promotion is possible and near free.  Hence the rise of the "influencer" - that wasn't possible in the 70s and 80s.  Closest I can think of is Tiffany, though I imagine their were resources behind her.

The smart and clever ones are even smarter since they use technology to learn more.

On the opposite side are those who are easily trapped by social media and distracted by tech.

For what it's worth, neither could I at the time it was happening. It was pretty absurd.

Applebees killed themselves when they did what every successful, shiatty chain does: change the menu so they stop serving food at or slightly above high-end frozen aisle quality at low prices, and start serving food around mid-tier frozen aisle quality at high prices. They started that back in like 2005 at the latest.

Noodles and Company did the same thing a few years ago, and they'd barely even achieved the "successful" part of the formula before making the switch. Though to be fair they may only have done the "abruptly make the food a ton worse, in the name of extreme supply chain and food waste optimization" part, not the "raise prices 50%" part.

Yeah, it was ridiculous to me too.  But looking back it's easy to see that 9/11 panic was a contributing factor, even years later.

That's part of the fun of robbing the cradle, though.  We talked just last night about his turning 26 next year.  I laughed and said just wait, the decrepitude is coming for you too.  He makes old granny jokes, and I play along in a creaky "When I was yer age" voice.

The relationship is mostly built on shiatposts and memes, so it works.

Uh, familial relations don't inherently coincide with generations. In my elementary school, a boy was an uncle to a girl the same age. (He was the product of his dad's 2nd marriage, she was the granddaughter from the first marriage)

If your nephew is a child of an older sibling, it is perfectly plausible he could be nearly the same generation as you.
