Folks will say you're wrong because of Super Mario World, but IMO it does too much and changes things up too quickly. SMB3 is perfection.

I'm Gen X, and wow. SMB3 still gives me the butterflies. The original is also super special but so damn hard. And SMB2 was damn good too.

Which version of SMB2?  Choose wisely...

True it was a master piece but no way was Nintendo leaving the money future sequels would bring on the table.

I love SMB3, but I feel SMB2 doesn't get enough love.  Yeah, it's a re-skined version of a Japanese game, but if they had released the notoriously difficult version of SMB2 that was released in Japan instead, Mario wouldn't be the cultural force he is today.

Strongly agree. SMB2 is underrated and "LOL it's not really even a Mario game so you shouldn't like it hurrrrr" has always been a dumb take. It's good, and if you've fired up the game it's based on in an emulator you've seen that SMB2 is more polished-looking, so it's not like they just swapped some sprites and called it a day. The reskin to Mario works really well.

/ I like the Princess or Luigi, depending on the level.

I hope you're joking.

It is unplayable by today's standards. GOAT cannot be pure nostalgia.  Every single other 3d mario is superior.

That said, I would love if they did a true remake.

I agree with most of what you said.  You really should go beat SMW and the 3rd ones though - they aren't particularly difficult.

The damn hands in the final world always kicked my ass in 3. I could make it past sometimes, but by then I'd be low on items and lives. Now, out of practice and with middle-aged reflexes, I bet I'd have trouble even making it that far without a ton of practice. Plus all the easy ways to play the game now add more latency than the as-near-to-zero-as-it-gets of an NES+CRT TV, which, even in the best case, makes all the games slightly harder.

SMW is high on my to-finish list for older games.

I agree on latency. Sometimes I don't notice it much, but when I do it feels brutal.

Yeah, I've got the first three 3d Marios in that re-release pack for the Switch. SM64, the Gamecube one with the squirt gun, and the first Galaxy. Galaxy's the only one I hadn't played, did a bit of that with my kids when we got it. Was OK, didn't really like it. Remember hating the one on the Gamecube back in the day, but I'll give it another try. 64's good and I'll make my third serious attempt to get through it pretty soon, probably.

I really need everyone to stop releasing games for... oh, 20ish years, so I can catch up on my backlog.

Lol.

I can't stand 64 anymore. It's controls and camera are so bad. Personally I love the galaxy series. To each their own.

Smackledorfer:

Oh yeah, definitely just my preferences. And 64 does look like something a 12-year-old fan threw together over a Summer, these days, especially the disjointed and nonsensically-laid-out levels. I like how it plays, though.

It is so farking goddamn good. I just played through it again last year. It's still incredibly fun and the controls feel tight, with lush environments amazing music.

LOL at the person who responded to you and called it "unplayable." I guess they speak for everyone, right?

I'm also a huge fan of Super Mario World, but 64 was really a game changer and as one of the first major 3D release it's impressive how refined the whole game feels.

Obviously I don't speak for everyone, and neither do you.

In all the mario 64 discussions I've engaged in since joining Fark, you are the first to actually claim to have played it recently and I'll take your word for it. But claiming the controls are tight? That's gotta be a farking joke.

Everyone else says (including everyone irl who has claimed to still love 64) hasn't revisited it in a decade. The controls and camera are awful compared to any modern 3d platformer. I'd love an actual remake as the game has it's charm - enough to make me pop it back in and get 20-30 stars every year or so.

I will probably beat the switch version just to say I did it, but again I can't stress this enough: the game plays like shiat compared to modern platformers.

I suppose the difference in our perspectives. You've mentioned regular participation in game threads and are comparing it to modern platformers - which I haven't played. I'm a casual gamer who still owns the 64 and GameCube that I purchased in their original runs. This is your domain and I suppose I've wandered into it.

That being said, no, I'm not joking and I mostly wanted to give a high five to the other Farker that also loved Mario 64. It feels like a polished product that 100% holds up to play today and it's my favorite in the series (close second is Super Mario World).

I don't understand what could be considered so problematic with the controls or camera. Mario moves where I want him to, when I want him to, and there is a dynamic range to his jumps, walking speed, crouches and attacks. Wall kicks are critical to getting some of the stars and yes, 24 years after it was designed, it is still fun and easy to make those moves on the controller.

The camera gives you two options to switch between, the Mario viewpoint and Lakitu camera as well. I never had trouble seeing what I wanted for a given location, since I can always toggle between them and change angles as well.

When Super Mario Sunshine was rolled out on GameCube, I didn't care for it, and I don't own any more recent consoles and sort of fell out of gaming. But I love Mario 64 for the level design, environments, and controls. It is still a fun and seamless experience today.

For someone who regularly dips into modern platformers the experience of Mario 64 must feel different.
