Well, that's just going to please law enforcement no end, especially the DEA and FBI. But I'm sure they voted Trump so it they'll get over it.

Ulbricht was the founder and administrator of the Silk Road darknet drug market

So he's an entrepreneur.

graduating with a master's degree in materials science from Penn State

Educated man.

Ulbricht commissioning the murder of five Silk Road users

So he placed some bad orders. There are plenty of orders I placed on Amazon that I regret.

The movement to grant clemency to Ulbricht has picked up support from celebrities, like British rapper M.I.A. Support for Ulbricht's cause is strongest in the overlapping worlds of libertarian activism and cryptocurrency fans

He has support from the respected community.

Why is this man still behind bars?

LAW AND ORDER!

So these sound mostly like state crimes, that Trump can't pardon so they're talking about clemency, which is just reducing someone's sentence. I don't know if the President has the power to do that either but Trump doesn't really care about technicalities like Presidential powers.

Look, ever since they threw Donald Jr's coke dealer into jail he's been having to get his supply from some guy on the street corner named Raoul and they're pretty sure he's been cutting it with drain cleaner, at least for Jr.

They need Silkroad back so his nostrils will survive until he runs for president in 2024

It has to be a federal conviction for Trump to do anything.

Donnie only cares about how much media buzz he can create.

It's actually a tricky one from a purely legal standpoint. He was never convicted of the murder-for-hire stuff (and it doesn't seem like any murders actually occurred); prosecutors dismissed the charges after he was convicted on the other federal charges.

So on paper, you have a guy sentenced to two consecutive life sentences for non-violent crimes. While he committed direct crimes, he mostly facilitated others in the commission of crimes, primarily money laundering and drug trafficking. It's definitely possible to think that his sentence ought to be commuted (not pardoned) if you set aside the murder-for-hire thing as unproven.

But, you do have to set aside the "there is evidence, though unproven in court, that he paid a whole lotta money to people in the hopes that they'd do murders for him" bit. And that's not always easy.

TFA said they dropped the murder-for-hire charges, so that shouldn't have a bearing on his sentence.  And life without parole for drug dealing and money laundering is excessive.  In any event it looks like Preet Bahara prosecuted him so that's where Trump's motivation in all this comes in.  No interest in justice or fair sentencing, just sticking it to one of his critics.  So I'm fine with him commuting the sentence, even if it's for the wrong reasons.

You'd think that, but oddly, that's not actually true. Things that haven't been proven in court can actually be taken into consideration in sentencing, and were in this case.

2020-12-16 3:24:44 AM
I do think his sentence is on the "cruel and unnatural" side of things.

Barely Sociable did a video on this guy a couple weeks ago.  TLDW: neither the murder for hire victims nor the hitman existed, the owner of Silk Road basically paid a guy in Vancouver a million bucks worth of bitcoin to do nothing.

I honestly don't know whether that makes it better. Like, if you're trying to determine whether someone is a threat to society, "so eager to buy into murder-for-hire schemes that he gives seven figures to have a nonexistent person kill another nonexistent person" is something of a red flag.

Trump will grant many pardons much worse than this. At least in this case you have a valid complaint of a sentence not fitting the crime, and the guy has at least served time for his crap.

When people tried to sell murder for hire services and nuclear weapons research papers Ulbricht did not blink, flinch, or otherwise express disapproval. He rolled out the welcome mat.

How about for facilitating the sale of poisons and illegal weapons. Which he did

Just outside Trump's Fort Lauderdale rally last spring there were some scruffy young dudes urging "freedom for ross"

If you can get 20 years for driving the car in an armed robbery, then I'm fine with life for being the murder supply depot.

He ran an anonymous web portal for illegal financial transactions.  Mr. Trump owes billions to those in power including bad people, and he has no way of paying it back once he leaves office.
I think an arrangement can be reached on that pardon.

No, the silk road didn't allow murder for hire, kiddy porn, or credit card info. The murder for hire stuff was orchestrated by an FBI sting. Undercover agents fed him the story about his friends flipping on him, and then suggested he kill them, then set him up with a "hit man."

So, he got set up and sentenced for drug dealing.

It's so annoying. Dark web=alt right. I've been buying my weed on their for years. The silk road banned any porn of any kind, banned any hitmen, and banned any credit card details.

The modern drug markets are exclusive to drug sales as well. I've literally never seen any child porn in my life, and I have more than a decade of dark web use.

When it's anyone who wasn't prosecuted by a hero of ours, we assume the justice system is corrupt and out to get you. You here white guy and dark web and now he farks children. Great, totally not damaging. This man is going to die on prison with society telling everyone he's a pedo, because he sold drugs online and never once allowed anything but drugs on his site.

Damn it's good to be a white gangster.

Didn't he just kill a black guy after 40 years in jail for being an accessory to a murder? Like he got rid of the bodies.

Anyway fark this guy, he should be doing at least 20 years.
