(The Lancet)   Describe a scene for me: A boy is standing on a toppling stool to reach up and steal cookies. His sister is trying to steady the stool. Meanwhile, their mother is washing dishes and the sink is overflowing. Got all that? Good. You have Alzheimer's   (thelancet.com) divider line

Yeah I've been trapped around older adults my whole life and I hate-watched about 80% of all of Trump's live events.

My lexicon is butchered beyond analysis.

The prosecution or plantiff should simply reply, "person, woman, man, camera, TV."

If, like you, you are wondering WTF subby was is about.

TFA is about using people's description of a scene to indicate if they might have Alzheimers.

My typing has always been pathetic and my current keyboard is missing a couple of keys, and other keys have the letters worn away. But yikes, I've been demented since high school by some of those benchmarks.

I almost never use point form though, so I guess my prolix style keeps me this side of Alzheimer's. That's not very comforting, given how arbitrary those verbal cues seem.

They may sound arbitrary, but they've genuinely found certain patterns to be vastly the fark predictive with some psych stuff (and now I guess Alzheimer's too.)  One of those, "Well we don't know what exactly, but this sure as hell is indicative most of the time."

/the example is pretty hugely simplified
//what they're looking for is really specific repeated patterns
///not so much this and that farkery with word usage etc.

What's a toppling stool?

Is it like some sort of torture device? Where you feel like you're eternally on the brink of falling over?

Hahaha, you're a good person. I read the entire article until I found that image, took a screenshot and zoomed in just to see the examples. Thanks for sharing.

Basically, muted written responses are a predictor of dementia.

Its a game when you poop and it all stacks on top of each other, and you start aiming better to make it taller. You lose when it falls over, but everyone wins by playing.

Soooo... texting is indicative of dementia?

If I have time and space, you get something resembling what's in the blue box. If I have 30 seconds, and it's got to fit on a Post-it, you'll get the stuff in the yellow box. If I were to get stumbling drunk, or gobble down foul tasting mushrooms, or something like that, I'd produce what's in the red box. That's really not changed much since high school. However, I've still lost the ability to consistently walk into a room and remember why the fark I wanted to go there. They do need a better test, though. Using the current standard diagnostic tools, getting diagnosed with mild cognitive impairment actually requires you to be pretty tore up already. I've watched some old people be obviously going downhill for years, getting to the point where dumb as most TV is, they still had difficulty following it, and no diagnosis.

Bullshiat, she is doing nothing to help, she trying to make sure she catches the cookies when he falls.  Mom is clearly daydreaming about banging the neighbor, after taking a little too much to calm her nerves.

Yeah the girl is either unaware of the boy falling or is laughing about it after having set him up to fall. In either case helping him seems to not be on her mind, though it could be another split second until she realizes and reacts to the unfolding situation.

Mom is completely disconnected from reality.

Thank you, study authors, for making me feel better about how I constantly go into too much detail when doing written reports. I'm going to tell my boss that it just proves that I'm not demented.

Based on the examples in the left of this image, half of the people posting on social media have dementia.  Which explains a lot.

So if you answer in point form you have Alzheimer's. Whoever does journalism these days is farked because point form is the new standard.

Hah. Most of my interview notes look like the orange box. I hate writing or typing notes without interrupting the tech interview. I ish audio recordings are allowed so I can focus on the interview and not on stupid note taking.

My final written feedback is usually more verbose than a writer paid by the word for draft.

Likewise for me.  My crack was about people expressing themselvs on the web - I *assume* they would like to be understood and to not look like an idiot in public, but instead they seem to pass this study's criteria for advanced dementia.

I don't know, but diagnosing Alzheimer's might be more important once we can actually treat Alzheimer's. It wont help me to tell me I have an illness that you can do nothing about.

What next? New ways to detect going bald?
