You know what might have made money?
A SUPERFRIENDS film that was as bright and goofy and fun as Shazam was.
Y'know, instead of wasting mountains of cash on continually polishing this turd.

DC has fully embraced this "grimdark" model for its movies, and Zack Snyder is one of the leading exponents of that.

A big factor for why Marvel movies have, by and large, been better and performed better at the box office is that the people who make those realize they're making superhero movies, so they need to be at least a little bit fun.

There's also the big difference in that the people who make the MCU movies are fans, i.e. they're fans of Marvel comic books/graphic novels and they're fans of the earlier Marvel movies such Spiderman & X-Men. And they're now putting up on the screen what they as fans wanted to see since they were kids.

It's longer because they're just running all the action scenes in super-slow motion with a dirge-like soundtrack playing over them.

Star Trek: The Motion Picture.

The film ran out of money and time, and was essentially just a rough workprint with timing issues galore, and missing fx shots. The director's edition is the final, polished and complete version.

To be fair though, their animated series and one-shot animated movies are generally better. Except that whole Into the Spiderverse thing, which was just jaw-droppingly good on so many levels. But DCs animated fare has WB animation studios behind them, and they've been consistently better than most Marvel animated fare.

Actually, that would be Supes.

Batman works as grimdark. The WonderWoman movie worked until the third act. But Superman though has always been the opposite of grimdark.

To date I can not think of a single "director's cut" that truly made the film better, but can think of a few where the film was worse. Let us all think of Ridley Scott who has produced how many director's cuts of Blade Runner? I remember old interview with Roger Ebert who talked on this subject, pointed out that most cases movies need that control and voice over the director to make a good film. Often the director's ego is such that they are unable to see for themselves just how awful an edit could be, they simply are not objective enough.

I anticipate this version to be as bad if not more, this is after all a comic book movie, not high art for *#&@ sake.
