Of the songs on that list, Kelly Clarkson's "Underneath the Tree" is the only one that actually has gotten substantial traction as a seasonal hit, which isn't easy for an original holiday song.

It's really shocking how few original Christmas songs get any traction. I think I was about 10 when I realized that half the Christmas songs (the songs themselves, not the recordings) were absolutely ancient ones in public domain from as far back as the Middle Ages, and several years later realized that most of what was left was originally written in the 1940s-70s.

Come to think about it, it would be pretty interesting to list all of the Christmas songs that have had any real traction written since the 1970s:

-The 80s songs that everyone hates (Do They Know It's Christmas, Last Christmas)

-Fairytale of New York

-All I Want for Christmas is You

-One or two original Trans-Siberian Orchestra songs

-I honestly feel I'm being a little bit generous adding in Underneath the Tree, but sure, we'll add it.

Any others I'm missing, Farkers?

/I guess another thing is that a song has to be several years old to have officially "stuck" as a classic

The Kinja-verse slideshows are actually web responsive to screen size, about the only thing useful about that platform. So making even the desktop browser "thin" enough causes the slideshow to turn into a long list.

"Laaaast Christmas I gave you my heart, but the very next day you gave it away...." whatever that song's called. I hear it a ton every year.

Also, there's a horrible new cover of "Simply Having" that my work's been playing constantly, and it's all autotuned in the worst possible way. It makes me want to introduce my box cutter to my eardrums.
