That was nearly the size of my entire graduating class.

That'll kill a dozen or so of them, plus some people in their families.

Fine her a couple grand a head and see how much she stands behind it. I wonder if all 250 of the kids families agree with her or their kids lied or snuck out to go.

What is it when one person stands in a group of people and brings a horrible death on many of them?

Difficulty:  no bomb vest.

Why terrorists didn't recruit in the red states is now a mystery.  There must be a degree of fundamentalism that reaches peak toxic.

There are already fundamentalist militias in red states. They're just Christian.

Well, unless you submit more greenlight material, which is apparently articles about tweets or articles about white women being bad, this is what you get to read.

Based on the numbers that's gonna kill SOMEONE, guaranteed.

I don't know how people can do shiat like this knowing it's entirely possible, even likely, that someone will die from it? I would figure that's be something you'd carry with yourself for the rest of your life, but this year has shown that a bunch of people believe that unless it happens to them it's not real and doesn't matter.

So god uses a shiatty industrial looking old metal and concrete set of steps with welded pipe rails and a few photoshopped spangles?  I'd be a wee bit suspicious, you'd hope an all powerful being could do better than 80's public school architecture and some PS filters.

I'm confused how this is any different than a normal highs school in general? Or do you think 16 year olds are good about social distancing and mask use in the high school cafeteria, library, gymnasium, or at football games?

I get it. Bad form to throw a party for people least at risk - but come on - you guys also forced them to go back to school in the first place.

2nd comment to this effect already.

How can people really believe multiple kids are going to die from this party?  Information about mortality rates by age is widely available.  Evidently you're not even trying to pay attention

I know, and I was just making a silly joke. I'm in the camp of people saying schools should have never been closed because children are overwhelmingly not threatened by this virus.

That being said, they could spread it to others and there are teachers to worry about.

It's a tough call, because I know people who have been massively impacted by their kids being dumped on them at home when they never thought they'd be without the taxpayer funded babysitting services.

2020-12-05 11:44:54 AM
We are all familiar with "those" parents.  Way too involved with Prom, and Homecoming.  Desperately living out their own glory days of yore or trying to make their kids become the rivals they envied so much in high school.

Alphax: That'll kill a dozen or so of them, plus some people in their families.

Kill a dozen of them? Rubbish. The COVID-19 fatality rate in that age group is too low to be statistically significant. This is the sort of exaggerated misinformation which causes people to dismiss the more accurate warnings about the possible effects on vulnerable groups.

See also: the stupid claims that unvaccinated children have mid-life crises at 4 years old.

I have a daughter in college. She just came home for thanksgiving (her mom overruled my objection). Purely anecdotal, but she said the attitude is they're young, strong, and most won't suffer more than a few days of discomfort. Once they get it, they feel they can go back to 'normal' and not have to worry. I told her what science has to say about it. About 30 seconds in, her eyes glazed over. Basically, people believe what they choose to believe. I thought back to my own youth. In the late 70s and 80s I smoked cigarettes. The evidence was mounting, but I chose not to believe it because I didn't want to (even though I knew it was true).

Alebak: Based on the numbers that's gonna kill SOMEONE, guaranteed.

For there to be a 50% chance that nobody in a group of 250 dies if they are all infected, the mortality rate would have to be 0.3%. In fact it's about 0.01%, so the chances of them all surviving if they all catch it is about 97.5%.

Doubtful, the outcomes in that age group are almost universally good. The problem is the plague rats will end up killing 100s of *other* people.

On the bright side there will less competition for collage spots and/or jobs for the ones that survive.

Can you do the math for the infection spread when these kids go home and spread it to parents, grandparents, siblings, etc?

Well I was thinking that if 250 people were there, even if she only spent 1 minute per attendee, the last person in line would still be waiting over 4 hours. And by then she'd be really tired.
