Simple: magic bullet

Somebody wanted him dead and got inside information on his work schedule and hired someone with a rifle to wait in line of sight of that door until he showed himself then *bang* *dead person*. They should be looking at who might have wanted him dead that badly.

Pretty much this.  They won't find the killer at this point, but it's not an insane concept to work out

So he wasn't actually "behind bars" when he was shot, am I understanding this correctly?   I ask 'cause I am easily confused by words.

Hit by a trained sniper using a heavy weapon.

Maybe I'm a sheltered lil' snowflake, but I was not aware jailhouses had their own physics. Is this related to toilet wine?

I think this is called the bribed guard effect.

Yep the actual killer is a ghost unless they find the person who did the hiring and they roll over on the one who pulled the trigger.

So hat I get from this story is that a guard either shot him, or let one fo the inmates shoot him, or let a guest shoot him, and then made up the shiattiest story ever, and the police were like, yay we hate him so let's go with that.

no, only a book depository.

I just watched that recently.  It took me a few scenes to realize that I had seen him before.

Negative.  The details given suggest someone outside did shoot him. They do investigations into this. It's not like a cop can shoot a guy and the other inmates stay quiet. They do ballistics. Jails and even minimum security ones have cameras all over.  The story specifically says he turned towards the entrance and that's when he got shot.  Someone outside was tipped off on where he would be

ClavellBCMI: who might have wanted him dead that badly

A 20-year-old hasn't yet risen to a level of trust in a criminal enterprise. Also, in a minimum-security work/furlough center indicates his connection to crimes wasn't that great.

It's weird all around. Has to be a very personal vendetta.

White Supremacist gang initiation. He was just the wrong color in the wrong place at the wrong time.

A guy who ran a drug distribution center out of a pizza delivery place eventually got fired and everyone involved got let go.

About 6 months later his girlfriend showed up at 2am at my door crying, saying he'd 'committed suicide,' in his jail cell.  Nobody was confused about what had actually happened.

So we watched anime, and got some breakfast later.

Or they were going after someone else and got the wrong guy.

could be a rando drunk shot outside his house that day, went inside and passed out. perhaps a hunter overshot a mark and never thought twice about the result. some kid could have been f'ing around with his uncles long gun. things happen.

If only this had happened on or near a facility that employed a large number of law enforcement personnel, they might have been able to catch the perpetrator.

Meh, I liked the logical deduction in the episode, but to me the TR-116 gun just opened up too many questions about beaming technology and why no one had made a weapon like that before.

We watched her favorite - Escaflowne VHS subtitled.  Then the original Oh! My Goddess VHS, also subtitled.  They'd been shown at GenCon a couple months earlier, so I'd picked them up for her to watch, but secretly I loved them, too.

She said it worked out very nicely, escaping from all the drugs, sex slavery, and murder.  Escaflowne and Oh! My Goddess were a great way to reset the weekend.  But it didn't work out in the long term, between us.  Still ... nice ride.

Has anyone heard of a ZIP GUN????
You can cheek the bullets & find the rest all over a prison medal shop.

I was being facetious, but that's actually pretty heartwarming.

I'm gonna go with someone about a mile away fired their rifle and missed the backstop (if they even had that).

Wouldn't be the first time some random bullet found its mark.

I vote for the: someone really wanted to test out their sniper skills and shoot a real target. So, they figured they'd target someone who they thought no one would care about... a convict. I doubt it was a targeted shooting. Just a convenient target.

Mister Peejay:

I seem to live a life that most people would consider a made-up series of completely ridiculous stories.  It would never sell. :)
