Mergers and consolidation?

I think that discussing the destabilizing and dehumanizing effects of mass-scale technology is a frivolous first-world endeavor and that we should revere the anonymous submitter as a god.

I got forced over to youtube music last night as they fully shutdown google play, now as predicted, my regular youtube video suggestions are full of music videos I couldn't give one flying fark about and no amount of "Do Not Want" tagging is making them go away.

"Many researchers have already shown concerns around algorithmic justice and potential racial and gender biases of the design of these platforms," he explains. "If these features are becoming increasingly ubiquitous, while ethical concerns are not yet fully addressed, then the potential implication could be disastrous - especially for those whose voices and identities are already marginalised on one platform and increasingly more in others."

I remember the more innocent days when it was nearly impossible for a team of humans to enforce a consistent code of conduct on a tiny message board perhaps spanning a couple dozen regular posters and there are now idiots who believe you can evenly enforce standards across userbases spanning hundreds of millions of people by using algorithms and automated programs.  I apologize if you were offended.

The Unabomber's Manifesto, while containing an unsurprisingly large amount of batshiat crazy, actually has a really good section on the incompatibility of advanced technology with human happiness and independence.

It's easy to do that when everybody is being brainwashed by the same algorithms.

"Extremely flexible and transparent models." That would be YOU. Just plugging right in. Sucking it all up. Checking the prices. Clicking the buttons. Writing the buzzwords. Taking the Stand. Buying the merc. Feeling validated.

Science. it works. Even on you.
Now get out there and assert your individuality again by buying something!

Fark, I could do this all day, it's so well documented.

I would beg to disagree with you, but as a powerless brainwashed extension of all my apps, I have no autonomy and I think that I should thank you and go back to work.
oh fark I'm late. My internet has been turned off and now I'm going to shoot myself.
Do you know where I can pick up a gun?

No they're not.  Facebook is the biggest one and is a catch-all for basically everything.  Everything else created since tried to do ONE thing well.

Myspace re-branded to music promotion.
Instagram is for photos
Parler is for nazis
Tik-tok is for weird-ass music videos that I don't understand because I'm not 12.

I'm sure there's a lot more out there but I'm unaware of them.

I see you are also familiar with my acquaintance who ran the package business out of his house in Montana.

I know his means are a matter of contention, but do not worry, if there is anything I have learned from Fark Dot Com, if you are the kind of person who uses violence in order to overthrow an oppressive system, you simply have to be dead long enough before they want to put you on the twenty-dollar bill.  Time heals all murder.

Do not worry, my child, in the near-future, we will directly interface with computer technology, you will not even need a gun anymore, you can simply upload Windows 95 to your brain and then it will "crash" on its own volition.

A future where the leading cause of death are earlier versions of Windows is a world I want to be a part of.  I hope you will join me.

Social media brought us both President Obama and President Trump.  If that isn't a case for it being a threat to democracy, I don't know what is.

I saw a movie when I was young, and I have never, ever wanted to be a part of it. Then somehow I was sucked into my computer, which is how I am able to warn you.

We never made it to Windows. But I'm very happy down here, hanging out with Jeff Bridges. We are never coming back. It's too late for you.

/I do miss windows though

"The social media economy is an advertising economy and is today already highly concentrated. This development is likely to continue because capitalist competition has a monopoly tendency."

For some reason, they forgot to include the word "assimilated" in there.

How to be compeditive on the free market (psst it's not at all what they tech in economics):

Don't be too much shiattier than average, and have a good marketing campaiogn.

that's it. No one that really succeeds is trying to make "the best" version of anything.
They are instead trying to basiaclly all do whatever it is they see anyone else doing that appears to be working.

They just copy each other, and none try anything really out there new, cause that'd be risky and business  don't like risk, they like to feel assured of profits.

leave risky stuff to the startups gambling VC or crowd sourced yahoo money, not the corporate coffers.

It is easy to see in ALL INDUSTRIES.
Stagnation of not doing anything too new too risky too out there in designs.

And thus anything that turns into "industry" all does this exact same thing of going homogeneous.

The entire original point of GPM was that users could play their OWN collection anywhere.  That premise is officially dead.

I refuse to use YTM.  Although it's not my own collection playing, I've actually gone back to Pandora.  It's actually surprising how well their suggested music based off the artists I put in were.  For example, a new station starting with Paul Thorn followed up with John Prine, James McMurtry, Jason Isbell, Dave Alvin, Big Head Todd & The Monsters, Popa Chubby and even a little Ray Charles.
