Good for them.  There's a sad, dead mall by my house that the owners want to tear down and turn into condos, but the neighbors keep whining that this will bring too much traffic.  As opposed to when it was a functional mall 25 years ago and it didn't attract traffic?  NIMBYs are the worst.

I remember it quite well, back around 1988 it was booming and the place to be if you wanted to pick up high school girls.
I revisited it in 1994 and was blown away by how much it had decayed and how little was left. The bastards shut down the amusement park!
But hey--there was this little Mexican place at the entrance that sold 4 tacos for $1 and a pitcher of beer for $4.99, and it was awesome.

Reading that last word as "staff" got a brief confused puppy dog look out of me.

I hauled a complete MacDonald's Eating booth, curved plastic bench corner seating, table, and window set, with advertising out of a dumpster during a reno. I set it up in a jack shack I have on the property.

A jack shack is a deer jacking station for sliding open a one-way glass tinted slit window and using the shoulder height opening to park a rifle on to bring some meat to the shelter and hang it on the big, stainless meat-hooks, and use the electric saws to dismember it. Shallow grave outside to bury parts you don't want.

Anyway, it was a great place to sit and eat.

Also, never start up stuff with a guy who owns a jack shack.

Honestly, it's one of the better repurposing plans I've heard.

That's what happened with the Totem Lake Mall a town over from where I live. They went from sad, nearly dead mall:

To this, a mix of retail store fronts with residential housing behind them.

Wow a major flood of memories came back. When I was really young it was the place to go. I went with my grandmother there. She's gone and now the mall is gone. Dang. Didn't expect to feel things today.

The amusement park was 100% owned by someone other than the mall investors.

And it was still OK in '90-'92 when I worked there, but it really declined in the last 20 years.

Some of the Bill & Ted scenes were shot at and around Metro center.  I think some of the amusement park scenes were a mix of Castles & Coasters (the amusement park at Metro) and a place out in Mesa.  It's kind of sad.  I used to like hanging out there.  Before it was built it was all cattle stock yards.

I'm pretty sure it's all Castles and Coasters with a few shots from a San Dimas waterpark for B-Roll stuff.

But yeah, all of the mall scenes were at Metro, the ice cream parlor was called Farrell's and was inside of the mall. The bowling alley was Tempe Fair Lanes, and the high school was in Scottsdale. I think even the Circle K was in Phx. The police station, though, apparently they were cool shooting that in San Dimas, for some reason.

A property isn't going to receive the necessary attention when the property management company that owns it doesn't even live in the same state. (Common aggravation where I live.)
