People don't mash potatoes any more?

Not sure what that dough-in-boxes is all about,

That's surplus government cheese.  I kid you not.

I remember all of these except #10, no idea what that is. People don't use potato mashers anymore?

Cigarette lighter from a car.

I have that afghan on the back of my couch even as we speak.

The orange stripe isn't so bright, though.  More of a flesh tone.

Of course. I see it now.

Finally ditched our old-school Crock Pot that was a hand me down that had to be at least 10 years old back then, from when I first moved away from home back in the mid-80s.  The liner wasn't removable, making it a pain the ass to clean, and using it for queso dip was pointless, because even the Low setting never was cool enough to keep the cheese from burning at the edges.

It was kind of sad to see it go, but it went out with a bunch of other stuff to a woman's shelter my wife donates to a lot, so hopefully it's somewhere now being used for actual food, and not just queso.

Numbers 1, 9, 12, & 21 are still used today. When was the last time you  bought shoes and they didn't use a Brannock device to measure your feet?

That snack cake foil was the best.  We'd make a game out of trying to smooth it into a perfect mirror without tearing it...

I guess when you don't have a lot of toys, you take what amusement you can find.

I'll admit to not recognizing #27.  Is it a label maker?

Rolodex.   The round ones you're thinking of came later.

No it's not. That's the way Velveeta was packaged.

And Ding Dongs are still wrapped in foil.

Missing 78.

16 was for lo-fi voice recordings. We had a Telefunken console stereo that had all four speeds.

#25 is what you used to fire the photon torpedoes.

I received a #26.

#28 makes damn good non-espresso coffee.

#30 reminds me of hot dogs and popcorn

It was not common. I've only seen a few 16 records. I still own at least one shellac 78 though.

If it was Velveeta, it wouldn't have been bon that list. Lots of things come in boxes, some of those boxes are the same sizes!

Used to be common for little kids' records with somebody reading a story, able to "hold more time" than a 33 or 45.

I never realized 35 is now old. Not sure on #4, #10, and #27. A couple I recognized but never experienced directly.

Even older would be wooden cheese boxes.  Got one from my late granddad's workshop that he chucked some miscellaneous hardware into.  Still pretty clean, so it looks almost new.

#4 is an empty bank of pay phones.

The other two have already been covered in the thread.

#4 would have held a row of pay phones, probably in a hotel, airport, bus station, whatever
#10 is a car cigar/cigarette lighter
#27 is a telephone / address "book" - move the shifter to the letter and it pops open at that part of the alphabet

17 is shoe polish
25 is the "brights" button on the floor of the car by the pedals.  Step on it and your bright headlights come on, step on it again, they go back to normal

I didn't want to admit to it, but I didn't know those either.  I thought 25 was perhaps the emergency brake.

Cool, I love stuff like that. Back in the punk days (the original punk days) I repurposed a rectangular green metal Army ammunition box with a handle into a purse.

Got one that hosts my hand tools for around the house.  A gas-mask canister serves as a water proof holder for something I haven't figured out yet.  Used to (and still do) love to haunt the army surplus stores.

What are shoe stores using instead? These were all over the place the last time I bought shoes.

I bought Jiffy Pop a couple of years ago but the best by date passed so I chucked it. I had wanted to recreate childhood memory but flubbed it.

15 is a musical instrument, no?

What's a tire store doing with a meat mallet/tenderizer? Am I about to learn something new?

In a jug band, yes, but originally it's a wash board for clothes pre-washing machines (or for tough stains).

Smashing the entire roll with a hammer on the garage floor made much more smell (and noise).

The second whack always yielded a few caps that didn't pop the first time.

You can buy a rifle, a set of tires, a fancy coffee maker, a tree for the lawn, a kitchen sink, a socket set, a can of paint, and a pair of skates all in one place. Canadian Tire Money used to be accepted at bars but they do it all digitally now so those days are over. I don't know what the US equivalent store is.

You can get the same experience from scraping the heads from a couple of matchsticks into a small square of foil and balling it up into a little package.

Sort of.  It's a washboard for laundry, that was adapted into an instrument.  Sort of like the plumber's helper into a trumpet mute.
