Would it be fair to say "we're turning the corner"?

And yeah, Afghanistan is about who controls the heroin trade especially in Helmand province.

Also rare metals but mostly the heroin.

Time to go.

Afghanistan is now participating in international cricket, and turning out some great young talent.

So that's no guarantee of anything but it bolsters their opportunities for relationships with a lot of other cricket-playing nations. Nation-building is about chalking up little wins which grow into opportunities.

Yeah significant portions of the country are controlled by warlords and the heroin trade, but when was that last not the case? It was true under the Taliban, it was true under the Soviets and I'm presuming it goes back further than that.

Remember when the taliban offered to just give up Osama?

Pepperidge Farm remembers.

But that wouldn't offer a staging ground to isolate Iran and position against Russia and China.

Gotta love the grand game.

Capitalism creates empire. The former is the progenitor of the latter.

Alternative strategy:

1) Six weeks of aerial bombing, destroying all their infrastructure.

2) Go home.

The USA had more balls when they admitted they lost Vietnam. The Republican Party's denial that trump lost an election is just a tiny piece of their personal denials over losing wars that they take as their own individual dishonours. It's a whiole nation of denialism, all the way down.

And only half of them seem to be awking up to the damage it does. I wish there was some way to put that half in charge, but even some of them voted for McConnell's senate.

In addition, Milley appeared to confirm recent reports that Trump wanted the estimated 800 U.S. troops in Somalia to be withdrawn before he leaves office.

LOL if India wanted, they could do a first strike on pakistan nuclear arsenal and take it all out in one go. I bet if it were a combined India-US strike, the chances of success would be pretty much 100%.

If China wants to commit national suicide, they can strike back for Pakistan but they'll be farking destroyed in a nuclear firestorm.

And the end of the world, lulz. Not even close.

Yes, I remember that the Taliban's desperate offer to give up OBL AFTER they started getting bombed came MONTHS after the US offered not to bomb Afghanistan if the Taliban would just turn over OBL.

The US had even arranged for several Muslim countries to accept OBL's extradition and promise to deal with him fairly under Islamic law.

The Taliban's answer to this offer was basically "fark you, Satan. Allah will protect us."

So they got bombed, and THEN they decided to reconsider the offer, which by then was off the table.

Your argument still doesn't address why we didn't accept and end the war.

Why should we continue to prosecute a war when the objective could have been achieved.

Your argument is that we shouldn't have accepted Japan's surrender after Nagasaki and Hiroshima, and should have instead done a ground invasion and decades long occupation.

That is the argument of a sociopath, a fool or both.

You just have to understand the context.  The profiteering was a major success.  Everything else, not so much.

Because they were negotiating in bad faith.

Bullshiat, it very much is not.

Your argument, on the other hand, is equal parts superficial and revisionist.
