Regardless, I hope Trump doesn't show.  He'll try to make it all about himself in some way.  And the media will only be too happy to comply.  "Oooo...what's he doing now?"

Good riddance.

Did you catch Rachel Maddow's opening bit last night?  About installing Lamar Alexander as governor of Tennessee three days early?  They did it to get the previous governor out of the picture before he could do more bad things and didn't tell him.

Too bad we can't do that at the federal level.

This.

Comparing what happened in the past to what's happening now is ridiculous.

Someone like Trump would have never been a president in the past.  The seat was for dignified people.

shiat, not even going back all the way to when these "snubs" were, Jimmy Carter HAD to give up his peanut farm out of conflict of interest reasons..... for some reason.  But this dude not only had direct stakes in his company, he used the government to earn money through them.

Way more conflicts of interest than a farking peanut farm.

His devotees like him for his brazen assholery, not his policy.  People who vote R will cheer if he doesn't go.  It will not aggrieved anyone.  The snub would probably just motivate their base even more.

This article is dumb.

People back then cared about the air of dignity a president (or ex president) showed.  So snubbing the incoming president would actually push people to the other party because they didn't want to be associated with a party like that.  That shiat ain't happening here.

There is no guarantee of anything any more.   Who cares if he is there, who cares if he holds a rally.   The people that will watch (it will probably covered by NewsMax and Oann) would watch Biden anyway.   Biden will get sworn in and I think he will do his best to run the government but will be obstructed like Obama.   If he can build bi-partisan support it has a good shot.   Trump will rail and whine on Twitter but he has a lot of obstacles.   He will try to remain relevant, if he does Repubs will be scared but they should be.   If he doesnt things will get done.   Only time will tell.

Maybe the media will do what they should have done the first time around and ignore the idiot once he's back being a regular citizen instead of giving him a platform at every opportunity maybe he can finally go away.

To those saying who cares---is symbolicly important. On inauguration day, the outgoing President and First Lady welcome the incoming President and First Lady to the White House and the outgoing and incoming Presidents ride to the inauguration together in the same car.

It's a statement about the peaceful transfer of power. It's also a statement about the legitimancy of the election and the incoming President, which is why Trump won't do it.

I think the Obamas should do it. Trump will be in Florida or wherever he's decided to gather his plague rats.

So the Obamas welcome the Bidens to the White House and Barack and Joe can ride to the inauguration together.

IMO, it really wasn't.  It was a simplistic article, filled with misleading statements that to bring the reader to the author's opinion.

The two Adams cases were completely different.  They tried to reconcile.  They both chose to skip the inauguration because they thought their presence would make things worse,  not better.  That's not what's happening in 2020.

For Johnson, the article implies Grant won a long, bitter, close election against Johnson.  But:
- Johnson wasn't Grant's opponent - Horacio Seymour was.
- Article says Johnson was going for the Republican nomination.  He wasn't a Republican, he was a Democrat.  He and Lincoln were elected on the Constitutional Union ticket in 1864, a coalition specially designed for the war.  And as noted above, he didn't get the Democratic nomination.

Johnson did stay behind because he was bitter, but also because he was politically toxic - as noted, the Democrats didn't want him.

Just a very shoddy article all around.

Agreed. He's 78 now, which means he'll be 82 by the end of his first term and if he did a second he's be 86.

Not happening. He'll do one term, try to right as many wrongs as he can, then step aside and leave politics entirely and enjoy retirement.
