Remember when the Republican National Committee attacked Clinton?

"When the CIA, Department of Justice, and a bipartisan group of lawmakers pleaded with Hillary Clinton's State Department to designate Boko Haram as a terrorist group, her agency refused," said RNC spokesman Michael Short. "Clinton's pleas ring hollow given her failure to act and are another reminder that the failed foreign policy she crafted as Obama's Secretary of State has made the world less safe."

How about it, GOP?

Look at you.
You're the terrorists now.

460 would be more accurate subby, given that children in the custody of direct family members probably shouldn't count as lost or separated just because the parent isn't following up with the government.

This is kind of like how people ask, "Why aren't Muslims protesting Islamic terrorism?"  The simple answer is, they are, but you're not paying attention.

And remember:  Muslims are the #1 target of Islamic terrorists, and most of those kids crossing the border were ripped away from Christian parents.

Sure.

In this case, one assumes the parent would have the ability to contact the relative the kid was placed with.

/Obviously people who doe after being removed wouldn't be able to use the phone.

I don't really care which administration started this practice, or failed to stop it. Everyone involved should be ashamed of themselves. I am hard pressed to think of anything more cruel than this, to inflict upon a child.
Stephen Miller, you are at the top of my list to be looked at hard for prosecution. And if there is nothing that is indictable, you are still at the top of the list for persecution, until you are broke.

I think you are misunderstanding me.

Parent + kid travel to US.

US does stupid wannabee Nazi separation policy.

US places kid with other relative. US deports parent (or not, per tfa, as many of the parents were still ultimately released into the US to await a court date).

The US government cannot find the parent. But if your kid was taken and placed with your sister or your eldest son, or your father, what have you, wouldn't they find you? Wouldn't you call your brother at some point, or them you?

The most likely explanation is that the parent IS in touch with the kid, but the parent is simply not contacting the government. And who would blame them? For many immigrants who get released on their own recognizance they know or believe they won't be given status, so of course they don't keep ICE up to date.

At no point did I say anything about parents choosing to abandon their kids after trekking to the US and getting removed.

/Again, obviously none of this would apply to someone who died

Tfa states these kids were all released from federal custody by mid 2018 at the latest.

It does not explain where the 460 not placed with another family member currently are, though.  But the government has some terminology for stuff like that, particularly in immigration. So I could see many placed with something like a distant uncle or cousin that we'd consider family for general conversation but the government might not check a "placed with family member" type box.

You read my mind. I'm so, so tired of the shiattiest people controlling reality.

Seeing institutions that could and should be doing great things for humanity acting with at best abject incompetence and often naked, intentional malice while a mob of slobbering idiots cheers them on is exhausting. The US (thankfully) isn't my home, but for all its flaws, it's the closest thing to a great power with a social conscience we've got, and it's dying.

At home I'm watching our healthcare system collapse underneath me while our politicians deny the problem and again, a mob of The Worst People (tm) somehow controls the narrative and drives policy.

I don't know what the hell is happening and it's getting harder and harder not to say or do something that's going to make me inelligible to help anyone.

Next week: "We forgot to carry the 1: it's actually 1628."

The week after: "Oops, wrong place. It's actually 6281."

First week of January: "Crap! Digits are scattered wrong: 8621. We swear!"

Second week of January: "Who writes numbers like this!?! It's 86^21. Sigh!"

Day before inauguration: "I didn't even know there's such a thing: 8^^621. This is correct!"

/a^^n is the tetration notation. a^^n = a^(a^^(n-1)). So 8^^4 = 8^(8^^3) = 8^(8^(8^^2)) = 8^(8^(8^(8^^1))) =
     = 8^(8^(8^8)) = 8^(8^16777216) = 8^(too big for my calculator).

I'm probably wrong for lumping everybody together. The reality seems to be the Evangelical set has infused itself within the administration is truly ignoring, abetting, and directing it. Also, they like to think of themselves as the only true Christians and my thinking only of them when I say "Christians" either shows I've fallen for that or I'm just lazy. It's probably the latter.

Math.

I subtracted the number tfa states are in custody of direct family members from the total, as while I'm certainly not saying we treated them well, it is unlikely they are actually out of contact with those they were initially separated from.

well, yeah, but there's still all these kids who will probably never see their real parents again.  I'm sure some will, but I've seen comments from Trump apologists saying that they're better off with their American foster parents now anyway.

It might be one thing if they were talking about a specific case where a child was separated from abusive parents, but they say it as a blanket statement as if it should be accepted as true for all of these kids.

I'm looking forward to four years of hearing every week how this is completely 100% Biden's fault.

I'm looking forward to hearing over and over how we can't find anyone who knows anything about how the policy got put into place, and nobody has any idea who might have been involved in that.

I'm looking forward to the eventual feel-good footage of tearful reunions between parents and the children they haven't seen in years, that doesn't spend more than 5 seconds on how it all started.

Oh wait, I'm not looking forward to any of those things.  But they're all going to happen.
