99% of people focus on the COVID deaths.

COVID-related shiatshows :

Medical :
- preventive medicine basically gone
- mental illness (PTSD from this whole thing, depression, etc)
- long term effects of COVID we dont even understand yet or know about
- health care workers who will quit after all this, people who will change their studies

Financial :
- enormous debt and deficit
- pending massive homelessness crisis if congress doesnt do its job by december 31, sending 20+ million people into the streets, which will totally collapse the economy by collapsing the real estate market
- cost of hospital care for millions of people
- cost of massive unemployment rates
- cost of businesses going bankrupt

People :
- relationships being blown to bits due to this whole thing, mainly divorces
- suicides
- development issues for an entire generation of children
- women and children locked in with their abusive husband/father for months

This whole thing has changed society and if people think everything will be back to pre-pandemic ''normal'' any time soon, they are kidding themselves.

The first world has finally tasted for real what the ''third world'' has been living in day in day out, a society totally farked up without any control over the situation.

All that is nice and all, but after decades of the Rs declaring that the Ds are devil worshipers, evil, not working for God's plan, etc, why the fark should we return that abuse with niceness?  All that displays - according to the Rs - is weakness and that they can continue to abuse others who aren't like them.

NJ and NY were actually hit even worse.  About 1 in every 550 NY and NJ residents are dead.

Also, if you think about this, it's proof that COVID-19 is in fact deadlier than the flu, assuming you needed further proof.  The death rate from the flu is 0.1%... 1 in every 1,000 people who catch the flu.

For 1 in every 800 people in ND to die of COVID-19... even if 100% of the population had COVID-19 (which they haven't), that's still a clearly worse outcome than if everyone in ND had caught the flu instead.

Cheers. I'm in a Blue state, but a RED area. This is why COVID sucks. If it only hurt the ones being reckless, fine. Let it burn through the country.

But it's hurting good people who are being as safe as possible. I have a good friend with Lupus who is recovering along with her whole family, because one guy her husband works closely with is an idiot. She stays home and isolates. The kids are virtual learners. He has to work, because we live in the US and have no safety net to speak of.

Fortunately it looks like she's going to be okay. Not everyone is so lucky.

Hopefully early in 2021 we can finally get a final count of total death certificates from 2020. I bet it breaks the 450 000 mark.

November and December will add over 100k to that.  And then in Q1 2021, we'll see the holiday impact.

And let's just hope that the vaccine provides long-lasting immunity, because a lot of people in the US won't get one, and in other countries won't be able to afford one.

So COVID-19 will still be bouncing around the globe for a while, if not indefinitely like the flu.  Once you get your two shots, you'll just have to hope it worked for you (95% success means 5% failure) and that it will last for life.

You do realize human beings have to have money to survive in modern society right?

And the government can't just hand it out indefinitely.  A whole lot of people have to be producing for the money to keep flowing.

Your hypothetical guy (you did refer to him as "he") isn't going to die from losing his business. You might die (or be permanently disabled) if you catch COVID. You can't spend money if you're dead.

Human life > money

Overall, an estimated 299,028 excess deaths occurred from late January through October 3, 2020

The Pfizer and Moderna vaccines give zero immunity. It's only there to make sure you don't develop severe and lethal symptoms. You can still catch coronavirus, spread it, and still develop covid.

Covid isn't going anywhere. In fact, I'll bet a grand that case loads will skyrocket after widespread inoculation just because maskholes think it's a vaccine that prevents infection as opposed to a prophylactic.

You think we have too many assholes now who don't want to wear masks? Just wait till people who have been good about safety precautions suddenly join in with the anti-mask crowd.

WHAT ARE WE SUPPOSED TO DO?

The problem is that it's more like some random person going around shoving other people onto the train tracks.

I'm guessing I'm in the 90th percentile or better when it comes to how well I'm socially distancing.  I've still had to do quarantine... twice now.  I have a home health aid who comes once a week for two hours.  I go shopping every two weeks (which may include picking up an order at my favorite pizza place, but they only let one customer in at a time, all masked, tv monitor says when your order is ready).  When it was warmer out I'd socially distanced (mask, distance, outdoors) see a couple friends.  Now that it's cold I'm seeing another human beings face to face about once every two weeks, except my home health aid, who comes once a week.  She got it (her whole family got it).  Thankfully she and her family were okay.  She said her blood ox levels were down in the mid 80s for a bit.  I had to quarantine.  Tested negative.  Now the only person I see every week is, hopefully, covid resistant.  If you are in a community where people aren't socially distancing things like going out to the store every two weeks become more dangerous.  My brother had to quarantine.  He works at a grocery store.  No hazard pay at this point, and if you get sick you are required to stay home and call HR... which may or may not give you sick pay- their call.

Xi was very forthcoming with details early on. However he didn't appreciate being slandered by Trump, nor did he particularly appreciate us pulling out of pandemic response and research. The research blackout happened after all of that.

Besides, anyone with half a brain could follow the news and realize that it spreads from person-to-person, as well as being airborne. There were LOTS of things we found out about it, but because WHO/CDC didn't want anyone to panic, all of those discoveries were downplayed and disputed as histrionics. For fark's sake, we knew it caused infertility while it was still in South Korea.

I mean, shiat, airborne spread should have been dead obvious and crowed nonstop in the media after we found out just how small it's size was.

But Trump said there was no need to panic. And here we are.

Oh, I'm sorry.  I didn't realize we were supposed to invent our own reality for this discussion.  I'll have to bow out though as there's plenty of stuff going on in actual reality worth discussing.

"An infamous WHO tweet saying there was 'no clear evidence' COVID-19 could spread between humans was posted for 'balance' to reflect findings from China"

How is that a counter to anything I said? Especially the part where I specifically said the WHO was downplaying it? And how the same source says that China admitted to human-to-human transmission a couple days after the tweet referenced in your link, which means that by the time Business Insider got their hands on THAT information it was already old.

So, what's your point?

This one discusses both vaccines. The concept makes sense if you think about it: vaccines give you a fighting edge against infection but antibodies are internal, they won't do anything until an infection actually takes place. The only way to completely prevent infection is to literally change human biology to remove ACE2 receptors, but we kinda need those.

What these might be effective at is slowing or stopping the second and subsequent generations of virus after the initial infection. That kind of performance is not out of the realm of possibility, but covid affects so many people in so many different ways (as well as different outcomes depending on initial viral load as well as the specific way you got infected)* we really can't give any guarantees about what the vaccine is capable of at this time on the large scale.

*initial infection via eyes will introduce it into the bloodstream the quickest, so it's likely that method of infection gives you the best outcome as your body can recognize the infection more quickly. But this might also not be true for all cases as it would be able to get to T-cells more quickly as well, which is yet another variable to the equation.

Just hunker down until there is a vaccine.  This isn't rocket science.   We've kept my 91 yr old MIL safe since we took her in just before the first lockdown.

curbside shopping, do not go into any store, do not dine out, let every delivery age up three days before handling (unless they are perishable and you need to follow sanitation protocol first), no guests in your home (this includes cleaning or nursing care if you can manage it).  It is a virus, not a ghost.  Assume every person you interact with is a carrier and handle the situation correctly.  Assume everything coming to your home has been handled by a carrier and treat it appropriately.  This isn't forever.  This is just for another year.  Your at-risk family members will likely get access to the vaccine by spring.

Hang in there.   Don't get sloppy.  It isn't just your immediate family you would put at risk.
