My first week in the Uptown neighborhood of Chicago in the 80s I saw a white guy dragging his wife by the hair outside my window. I saw my only genuine bar brawl with white women throwing chairs and the bartender throwing booze bottles. White kids hung out in the alley huffing "tolly" (toluene paint thinner) from socks.

At the library I looked up the history of the neighborhood and found it was a magnet for Appalachian immigrants in the 1940s and 1950s. I guess I was seeing their great- and great-great-grandkids.

And if only they were better people they'd be able to go to an Ivy League school like he did. It completely ignores all the larger context of institutional and systemic issues that keep people in lower socioeconomic classes from having upward mobility. It's a hard right wing argument, packaging in a nice little book. The poor are poor because they're flawed, and not the poor are poor because there are folks out there that profit from keeping them that way. There is better and actual researched books on generational poverty that doesn't just amount to "poor people are idiots" but he came on at the right time with his Appalachian angle after the 2016 election and his shiatty book blew up.

Not too bad, except for most things I guess.  Working from home is pretty nice, and it's still nowhere so that even a moderately decent salary makes you Pope of Pooptown pretty quick.  I mean it both kind of sucks and is awesome being adrift in a sea of red idiots, because though it's kinda lonesome, it also isolates me from a lot of the stupid from people I mostly agree with.  It's like being a political hermit as well as a geographical one.

Please don't make fun of Louisville.  The people that live there have it rough enough.  They can barely figure out police shooting you dead in the bed at night is a bad thing.  That's about two steps away from trying to eat sticks and mud kinds of stupid.  The kind that needs disaster relief, not ridicule.

I'm from Northeastern Kentucky, had more than a few siblings move to Ohio.  All I know about this author, I attribute to the great and powerful Wikipedia.  Sure, maybe his mom or grandad might be some cretin from out of WV, but that still makes this guy just some asshole from SW Ohio.  His book would then be better titled "My Mom Was An Ignorant Redneck", or you know, whatever family member or members it was.

As someone said in a comment on the book and movie, so many people and farkers believe Deliverance is a documentary.

Well...if they always vote republican, it is their own damn fault they are poor. It's like the guy who told the doctor " It hurts when I do " That" and the doc says "Don't do that" but the guy keeps doing "That".

Almost half the country voted for Trump. You could say the same thing about tons of areas in the U.S. But keep perpetuating those stereotypes. It's real useful

Have not seen the film but did read the book, and instead of trying to do good, he became an investment banker or something like that. Ah, vulture capitalist per the wiki thing. Figures.


One of the people he thanks in the book's afterword is Peter Thiel, who is about as close to a real-life Bond villain as you're going to ever get.

my husband and i watched that movie and omg is was farking horrible and not even  unintentionally hilarious like the other stink bomb The Heart of the sea that Howard also directed.   Just such shiat and terrible acting,my god stop letting Ron Howard direct things.

Also stop letting JD vance do anything,he's such an asshole and he's going to run for senate.

I grew up in Appalachia and have no qualms with how Vance portrayed things although I dont agree with his politics or "just be bootstrappy" philosophy. That clearly doesnt work and the chemical and coal industries have constantly killed, poisoned and/or bankrupted millions of people for decades. But at the same time Appalachians dont seem to want to stop being victims and there is no denying they vote against their own interests. I don't know how I fix people like that. I got out. Some have criticized me for it instead of staying and trying to make it better, but I doubt I would be alive right now if I had stayed. It's a toxic region from top to bottom, often literally.

I saw it. I liked it. It was heartbreaking. I didn't know anything about the movie before watching it, so maybe that's why I liked it.

A man had to choose between taking care of his abusive, strung out mother or living his own life and breaking the cycle. I thought it was a false choice and would've picked a third option, but I could live with his decision.
