79 in actual years is about 146 in wrestling years. RIP Mr. Patterson.

RIP Stooge. Seriously though he came up with the idea of the Royal Rumble which is the most fun night of the year in WWE.

It was a hot night in Rio de Janeiro when he won the first IC belt.  NTTAWWT.

kind of torn.  i mean there are a lot of wrestlers out there including roddy piper who aluded to sexual abuse/intimidation from pat & others, including the famous ring-boy scandal in the 90's.

at the same time, patterson was an entertaining fella on the tv screen.

so all in all, RIP i guess.

Leader O'Cola: anyone got a clip to where he was outed on air?

Not sure about if there is one...but there's a line during the HHH/Rock match from Backlash 2000 where Jim Ross says something to the effect of "The parade must be over, Patterson and Brisco are coming down to ringside!" With Lawler retorting, "WHA?!"

Subtle reference but a reference nonetheless.

If you just know Patterson as an old man, you're missing out on one of the better mid 20th century workers

FULL MATCH - Pat Patterson vs. Ted DiBiase - North American Heavyweight Title Match: June 19, 1979

Fun fact:  Patterson's manager here, Ernie Roth (aka The Grand Wizard) was also gay and while he wasn't publicly open about it (kayfabe being kayfabe), he never made a secret about it among those in the business.

The evening gown match should have given it away.

Here's Sgt Slaughter talking about their famous MSG match. Starts at 19 minutes in if it doesn't link right.

Yeah, everyone in wrestling knew about Pat.  Hell, Dwayne Johnson based his character in Be Cool on him.

Also Patterson had a partner for forty years until his death in the early 1990s.  Odd as it may sound, wrestling and its travel heavy schedule may have been a huge factor since they were never in one place too long and the boys protected their own.

There was one bit when Patterson and Brisco were doing the Stooges role, and at one point, they were in the ring doing the Hulk Hogan ear-cupping and JR says, "Hey, guys, he's single."

Glad he went with "Royal Rumble" for the name. "Manpile Extreme" would have been a little too obvious.

Luckily he was basically retired from in-ring action before steroids and pain pills were as big as they were

I always chuckle at the fannypack picture of The Rock because I know there was a small pharmacy in there.

Anyone notice the subtle Jon Moxley tribute to Patterson on Dynamite? Finished his promo with a singular "going banana".
