When Arkansas left it was all Texas teams. They should have just called it the Texas Athletic Conference.

The demise of the Southwest Conference deserved a better story told about it than the SMU 30 for 30, couple that with the hardcore games being played which determined who got into the Big XII and who didn't and you've got some neat stuff to work with.

The SWC was NEVER respectable.

ESPN doesn't give a shiat about anything beyond the ACC or SEC.

I'd swap Bailor for Houston in a heartbeat.  Bailor can go ask Liberty for a conference invite.

UT will never let Houston into the conference. Too much recruiting and tv. Baylor is sufficiently in the middle of nowhere to be allowed.

Ah yes, the SWC; where Texas oil barons said, "Fark the NCAA! I want my school to win and I don't care how much I have to pay the kids to get them to play for my school!"

Then SMU came along and all the other oil barrons biatched because, "HEY, THEY CAN'T GET AWAY WITH THAT! WE'RE THE ONLY ONES THAT CAN PAY THAT TYPE OF MONEY!"

SMU's death penalty WAS its demise. It was already dying, that was the announcement that it was terminal, and the conference realignments in the mid-'90s was the burial.

There's a lot of history that can be told, to be sure, but Pony Excess covered the end quite well.

They should bring it back, add UTEP and North Texas and become the Texas 10.

/or Texas 9 + 1

Pony Excess was made by the son of a SMU professor (you actually see the father's 1987 news interview from the day of the death penalty announcement).  It was told from a SMU perspective, not a SWC one.

And what the hell's UT gonna go? Move to the SEC and get their brains beat out by Alabama every year?

Or worse, go the Pac-12 and become an afterthought?

The thing is that UT doesn't have to go anywhere. They have secured enough dominance over the big-12 so much that they do not have to share the ESPN channel with the rest of the division.

If that were all true how in the Hell could Oklahoma consistently outbid them?

West Virginia doesn't need to be in it.  Drop them, and bring in Houston, Memphis, and Colorado St.

UTSA has only been playing since 2011, and they're a better forward-thinking pick than either of those schools.
