Royalty has a large retinue that pretty much has to follow them.  She is also protecting them.

And for the record, if I'm ever that rich, I'd rather own hotels/properties and use the royal suite, rather than have something sit empty most of the year. Just the thought of that waste upsets me.

/so maybe one day, don't be surprised if you see a really swanky NYC apartment on AirBnB :)

The Duke of Edinborough is unwell & had been living at Wood Farm, Sandringham which is (for over 100 years) where the Royal Family has hospice facilities & a place to put the Royals who shouldn't be seen by the people. Windsor has full-service hospital abilities on site & nearby. He no longer is allowed to drive & public appearances are few.
