(YouTube)   Mathematics of Vibration phenomenon or swarm of nanobots? Since I was told there would be no math, could some smart Farker explain what is going on here?   (youtube.com) divider line

That could have been cool to watch. It was more like those stupid pron closeups.

Chladni figures. They're eigenmodes of vibration: points where waves cancel and the vibrating surface stands still, allowing particles sprinkled on the surface to gather.

Eigenvectors are also applied to quantum mechanics, where the quantum field takes the place* of air.

This.  It comes from the resonant frequencies of the metal disk.  Change the dimensions of the disk, or the material, or how you add energy to the system, and you'll get different patterns.

Point of clarification regarding the title. The SNL quote of Chevy Chase/Gerald Ford was "It was my understanding that there would be no math."

The science here is cool too.

Well I don't understand it so I'm going with democrat conspiracy.

You can also do it with fire. Mostly just standing wave patterns, but related to eigenmodes.
