The smartest people I know are Trump supporters. Unfortunately, so are the dumbest, and the latter outnumber the former about 10:1.

This is the central guiding principle of the GOP:  "I don't care how much damage it does or how many people it harms, as long as I can make a buck on it."

Parasites.  Uninterested in the long-term consequences to the host as long as they can feast today.

If you think you're smarter than Trump, you're probably right.

If you think Trump is smarter than you, you're absolutely guaranteed to be right.

That has not been my experience at all.

A handful of smart people I know are Trumpers, yeah.  But by far, the ones I know that are the hardest of the hard Trump supporters are farking idiots.  They were idiots before.  They are idiots now.  The biggest difference is that they have social media now.  So they can share their stupidity with everyone.

And btw, that is a telling point...  I remember when computers were only used by smart people.  Wow are those days long in the past.

Sort of like those scam e-mails from Nigerian princes; they are designed to be obvious to anyone with half a brain, because the scammers want only stupid people to respond.

Is there a term for that?

There are a bunch of white folk here in the US who would benefit from policies like Medicare for all and a more progressive tax policy.

They keep voting for the person who hates non-whites more.

Categorizing or characterizing someone as "smart" is very subjective based on your existing education, cultural awareness, life experience and everything you personally perceive as "smart."

Personally, I have found that many Americans are pretty dumb.

One of the most surprising Trump supporters was this woman I knew who worked with a friend. Middle eastern but born here, two degrees, stunning looking, always had a twenty something bf, smart, when the earthquake in Haiti happened she practically raised/spent her own money to rebuild a village. Just amazingly charitable to a fault. My buddy showed me her Twitter feed a few years ago and she went full blown trumper, I guess moving to Florida can do that to a person.

That's easier said than done. We've seen the electoral maps for years; geography determines much. I moved a few hours out of Chicago to rural Indiana and the politics reversed. As did the information available. I can get the South Bend Tribune, owned by the Chicago Tribune and printed in the same place as the Chicago Tribune, but can't get a Chicago Tribune--which I routinely bought in the St. Louis and San Francisco areas... People watch some TV out of Chicago, but practically refuse to watch their news. Watch Fox and refuse to watch CNN. Fox is on at the restaurants, the waiting rooms, etc. And while I've sent the local hosp. gift subscriptions to Time and The Week magazines, they don't put them out... I suspect they don't put them in the HS library either.

(I'm hoping the news issue changes some now. The local cable company is too cheap to provide TV channels, recently forced us into a streaming service. I've come to enjoy BBC. Maybe some others will find new info sources too.)

The part where I said, "If 2020 taught me anything" meant the election we just had here in the US. Sure man's inhumanity to man is a shared experience for human kind, but white folks are the majority of Trump's supporters even though they gain no material benefit.

There's a whole bunch of GOPers, especially since 11/3, who are way past "deserve to be disbarred."

Dominion Voting - among many others - could probably make a good case to put half of Trump's spokesghouls in the ground for libel and defamation, even if they had to climb Mt. Sullivan to do it.

The fact that the Traitor's own people have been caught admitting they know he lost and that therefore he and his people are lying when they lie about fraud would go a long way towards "actual malice."

White people were also the majority of Obama's supporters. And Biden's.

I'm not denying that Trump built both of his campaigns, and his presidency, on not-even-thinly-veiled white supremacy. But I haven't seen anything to indicate that he won the support of the majority of whites. So, yes, a lot of white Americans voted for Trump, even though he made their lives (and everyone else's) demonstrably worse. But, for whatever reason, a good chunk of those whites who voted for him did so because the other side failed to convince them that they would make their lives better. Maybe there was nothing the Dems could have said to reach them; maybe all seventy-something million Trump voters are just out-and-our racists. But that seems unlikely.

I guess my original point is that we need to get rid of the idea the democracy is the default; that everyone's natural inclination is toward embracing, practicing, and protecting democracy. Democracy is unnatural, the same way civilization is unnatural. It requires us to put our own interests aside, or at least in the context of others' interests and the common good. It's hard work. Most people, of every color, race, and ethnicity, would rather get their way. And for most of them, if that means hurting someone else in the process, so much the better. That's not a white thing any more than it's a black thing, a brown thing, a yellow thing, or a red thing.

2020-11-30 9:06:37 PM
Whites break Republican.  I am not encouraged by 2020. You got my original al point here, "So, yes, a lot of white Americans voted for Trump, even though he made their lives (and everyone else's) demonstrably worse."
You continue with, (paraphrase) but the Democrats did not have a message to win them over.
The fact that Trump was not a deal breaker for them is also my point.
