I observe three categories: the first takes the pandemic very seriously, implements the recommendations as extremely as possible, minimizes their interactions with others because you can't catch it if you don't catch it.

The second acknowledges that covid-19 is a real thing, but it's something that by and large affects other people.  This group will acknowledge the recommendations when convenient, but most of the time take the position that "if I bend the recommendations just a bit, it won't really hurt me".  Members of this group treat Thanksgiving, for example, like it's 2019.

The third group is made up of those who believe that there is no virus or if there is, it's just another form of the flu.  People have always died of the flu.

As far as I can tell, no western government has accepted that their populations are divided into these three groups.  And until this happens, there can be no effective policies for dealing with the pandemic, including making any vaccination process effective.  The virus will live on eternally, mutating as it goes, possibly into something worse.

They might be happier. And it would be cheaper for the tax-producing states. They could live off the land like their mentors, the settlers, and liberals could satisfy their desire to help by air-dropping them winter clothes. The right-wingers could satisfy their desire for gunplay and might making right by dueling over the best clothes.

That number is up to 50,000 deaths under 60 and counting in the US.  That's 1 in 6,000 of the total population of the US, or 1/260 of everyone who's had a reported case of covid.  That's pretty farking far from "practically zero", moron, and it's still rising fast.

The virus has already mutated but not to the degree that it has or will render any of the new vaccines ineffective. The scientists at the pharma companies understand that virii mutate and based their vaccines on the part of the virus, the spike protein, that can't mutate much without rendering the virus itself unable to gain access to host cells.

But as far as dividing the population, what viable ideas do you have for dealing with the 2 groups of covidiots?

I did read the report. If you're willing to discount a 23% increase in deaths over a 2% increase in total number, then you don't care about the data to begin with. That increase actually increases the number that died over that span as compared to the predicted amount based on previous years, which means it's a more than 23% increase.

You mentioned the car crashes, but accidental injury (very often from car crashes) really is a top killer.  I might as well post this.
Number of deaths for leading causes of death:
Heart disease: 655,381
Cancer: 599,274
Accidents (unintentional injuries): 167,127
Chronic lower respiratory diseases: 159,486
Stroke (cerebrovascular diseases): 147,810
Alzheimer's disease: 122,019
Diabetes: 84,946
Influenza and Pneumonia: 59,120
Nephritis, nephrotic syndrome and nephrosis: 51,386
Intentional self-harm (suicide): 48,344

That's 2018 data, thus no COVID-19 on there. It would be #3 on that list.  That said, you're under the impression that a high body count means we'd "do something" and that isn't necessarily the case.  Are we taking drastic action to stop heart disease?  Nope.  Now we put serious effort into quickly developing vaccines for COVID-19, and obviously that's a very good thing.  What if we put that much urgency into Cancer research next?  Or putting all that into general sciences?  How about research on more efficient carbon capture?  No?

Frankly I think that COVID-19 urgency came down to wealthy assholes losing too much $$$.  Plus disturbing their posh lifestyles with all the shutdowns.  I'd like to believe otherwise... but you see our priorities always gravitate to the needs of the wealthy elite.

Related stories - Rudy Giuliani Tests Positive For Slew Of Obscure Bat Diseases Unrelated To Covid-19
i.kinja-img.comView Full Size
NEW YORK-After undergoing tests to rule out the possibility of coronavirus infection, sources close to Rudy Giuliani confirmed Friday that the attorney tested positive for several dozen obscure bat diseases completely unrelated to Covid-19. "As of now, we have confirmed 27 diseases and counting inside Mr. Giuliani, many of which experts have only previously seen as communicable from bat to bat," said Dr. Allen Ellis, physician for the former New York City mayor, adding that a team of archaeobiologists from Harvard University who specialize in rare mammalian diseases discovered high levels of guano in Giuliani's blood. "While definitely suffering from more common bat-to-person transmissions like rabies, ticks, and histoplasmosis, Mr. Giuliani has also somehow contracted vespertilioma-a long-eradicated bat cancer researchers haven't seen since a very unusual case in Germany in 1903. He also has the bat version of diabetes. A number of these viruses are only sexually transmitted between bats, so this is extremely concerning. An especially interesting contagion located inside Mr. Giuliani's chest is linked to the only known fossilized remains of a rare Tibetan bat species, which was buried with the inscription 'kha rdung pho wang,' roughly translating to 'curse of the small winged mammal.'" At press time, Dr. Ellis was struggling to make sense of an abdominal scan of Giuliani, which appeared to show six live bats living comfortably inside his liver.

Another Onion story that could easily be a real story.  In fact you can't prove it isn't true Rudy.
