Back in the days of yore, when Christianity was still piecing together its basic tenets, they came up with the idea of a big birthday party blowout in December, where everyone got drunk and gave presents to each other. Some people were thrilled to receive the gold, but those who were gifted frankincense and myrrh were less enthusiastic. "This is bullshiat," said one, "now I have to wait until next year for a chance at some gold. How come the Jews get presents 8 days in a row and we only get one?"

So the heads of the nascent church, in their ancient wisdom, said, "fark it, we're doing 25 days. And candles, too. Suck it, Jews."

The Jews just shook their heads at the crazy goyim and went about their business.

It's a kids game, meant to keep children interested in being controlled by their elders, until they give up free will, stop thinking for themselves and accept the authority of the church, even as "adults."

Next question?

It is but syncretism where the Christian church usurped the Pagan high days. .. the winter solstice has, from time going back to who knows when, been focused upon (Brugh na Boine is an apt example.)
