And they rarely, if ever, sit down and actually read or study up on anything.  They see billboards as they zip down the road, they hear names in the 60 second news casts at the top and bottom of the hour while they are trying to win the radio contest, and they absorb whatever their preacher tells them.  By the time they get into the voting booth, they probably know the name at the top of the ballot, but have no recognition of the local and state names that affect their immediate lives.

TFA is spot on. Framing the narrative is critical to leadership, and addressing the stupid is a critical part of keeping audience attention. Dems core is a little more secure, a little less fearful a little less distracted by immediacy of generally noise level constant threat. They're also possibly a little better educated. The GOP adherents grunting and howling from their bolt holes is going to make for tough slog, their fears reducing their intellectual capacity ever more.   This is a tough spot going forward for our country. Investigation, prosecution if the provable irrefutable can be found it must, the more elevated and cartoonist the miscreants, the better. Barr, Pompeo, Trump all likelies.  Works projects, Warren upending the moneyfarkers and achievable national/patriotic ego boosting goals are paramount.

As 2024 steadily approaches the horizon  I'm reminded that I prefer vaseline sans verre dépoli. Biden's presidency must not be another Hoover.

Trump loses - we should investigate Trump voters.

Not a single mention of race or white nationalism. Take a bow, liberal NYT.

50 years of Republicans eroding public confidence in government by telling you it's an inefficient bureaucracy filled with lazy civil servants who are actively working against you, while at the same time fighting tooth and nail to stay in power.

50 years of gutting education funding.

50 years of crafting laws that favor white wealthy people at the expense of working class minorities.

I'm sure there is more to cover here.

73 million voters only represent 23% of the population, so even though people might look at this like "nearly half of Americans voted for Trump" but in reality they didn't.

If we had universal access to voting without gerrymandering, outside of a few areas, you'd never see another Republican win an election again.

White America's identity crisis. This is a reality check.
Youtube ac-EJlBtA10

Transcript:

"This is a reality check: it made for great TV and clickbait, but there was never going to be a fascist takeover of America's cities. There was an attempted coup, but it was mainly just embarrassing. It would take somebody actually clever to orchestrate something like what Adolf did. Trump and his sycophants can't even keep their stories straight for an hour. His campaign has always been a clown car wreck, and if they weren't stealing so much of our money and wreaking so much chaos, it would be really funny, but we know about all that.

The big story here is why so many people would gobble up any excuse to throw themselves behind so obvious a fake macho man, but that's what over 70 million people did, because white America is having an identity crisis, and as it turns out, when your identity is based on FICTION, you will defend that fiction as if your life depended on it. A nation with a false history, told that they're the greatest people on Earth, feeling humiliated by reality are going to follow anybody no matter how ridiculous if they're promised revenge.

In the end, they're going to destroy themselves in the process, whether their hero is Mussolini or that pharaoh who chased Moses or a reality show host, but to let the Trumpites off the hook a little bit, our public square is now privately owned. For sale to the highest bidders, which is the inevitable result of the business model of our nation having always been at cross-purposes with the business of being human. Marketing campaigns work and "Make America Great Again" took those who fell for it, mostly by regional misfortune, back to that mythic American origin story of righteous might and moral authority. In reality, the America they've been trying to dial us back to was 1692 Salem when the colonies were just the little playthings of their English lords and the colonists' demented version of Christianity gave them night terrors about everything outside the settlement walls, when first nations natives and Africans weren't human, when women were property, when justice meant burning witches, and science was seeing if they'd float first.

That is how stupefying it is to imagine that the AT&T-owned CNN, which makes 200 billion dollars a year in corporate advertising, and Joe "Iraq Oil-War" Biden belong in the same sentence as socialism. Socialism is a word that's been turned into a Pavlovian response trigger to make people quiver in fear about the quality of life in Japan, the UK, Israel, Canada. Socialism is simply the belief that a society should regulate its institutions rather than allow private tyrannies to oppress the peasant class. The same fundamental principle as a democracy or a republic. All of these words refer to a government run by the people. None of them applies to CNN and barely any of them apply to this country. Let's make this even simpler: either kings and feudal lords rule the people or the other way around. Those are our two choices and it doesn't matter what we call it.

What matters is that we face the truth, and what's happening right now is our karma for not dealing with our cultural monstrosity sooner. White America is having a psychotic break that has been a long time coming. Tℎe majority of wℎite people voted for a reality sℎow ℎost to save tℎem. That says it all. Democracy was saved by the majority of black women and men and people of color and a minority of whites. White people have like one more shot to redeem themselves before the natural demographics shifts in the country just do it for us. We have to get our origin story straight and face our childhood trauma. Until we do, we're going to have a collective mental health crisis.

So, one more time for the people in the back: we are a nation founded by extremists who lied and killed and stole this land, who refused to outlaw slavery as part of our declaration for independence, and whose self-rule was only for white aristocrats who owned land, and believed that they had a god-given right to it, and nobody else did. Now, regardless of the myths, that is not what Jesus believed. After the civil war over slavery, white America enabled the Confederacy to rise to power again, rather than uplifting and embracing the black women and men who helped build their empire. In the 1930s, white America didn't want to let in the Jews fleeing the Holocaust. National hero Charles Lindbergh wanted America to form a neutrality pact with Hitler. The airwaves were filled with Nazi sympathizers. In the 60s, whites didn't want to sit in the same part of the bus, or the same classrooms, or even restaurants as the descendants of slaves. White people were appalled at the protests threatening the good order of our caste system.

Martin Luther King diagnosed the illness of the white moderate "who paternalistically believes he can set the timetable for another man's freedom." Who praises incremental change and compromise and unity with white nationalists. Dr. King protested saying "The time is always ripe to do right. Now is the time to make real the promise of democracy." Those were his words and the country killed him, and Jack and Bobby Kennedy, and Malcolm X, and countless others for daring to challenge our extremism which continued. White America elected Nixon, and then Reagan, and then Clinton who militarized police forces and incarcerated black and brown people and poor people at rates never seen in the history of the world.

In the 2000s, white supremacy found a new way to shock and awe, they invaded a country that was no threat to us with the rallying cry "support the troops" as if it was the troops' idea. They killed a hundred thousand people for empire-building, just like they've always done, and most of America gave it a pass because it was an Arab nation and it seemed far away and the way we like our media is for entertainment purposes only. The bi-partisan war criminals and bank fraudsters and oil spillers and plunderers of the world, they hugged and took selfies in the name of what Dr. King called the white moderates devotion to their sense of "order over justice", but the majority of whites were so triggered by a black president and the dawning reality that the feudal lords really don't care about the peasant class, they elected Trump, an infamous racist rich kid grifter in the hopes that he might protect them. This guy was famous for stiffing people who worked for him and his celebrity crime family brings our fragile order into chaos and some people are surprised.

There's a virus killing 2000 people a day and we know how to stop it but we're not because we're still arguing with reality. So those who think there was ever a normal that we should go back to are in the deep end of our collective identity crisis. We want to go back to normal is just the PC way of saying "Make America Great Again."

President Biden speaks with a civility and a warmth that is a great relief. He also voted for and promoted that oil war as chair of the foreign relations committee in congress and on the talk show circuit. One of the first people that he's delegated to handle our life-threatening climate crisis is a top recipient of fossil fuel money, a former consultant to the notorious cancer and birth defect-causing Dupont Company. This guy has such a horrific environmental record, the actual Erin Brockovich just penned an editorial in The Guardian entitled "Dear Joe Biden, are you kidding me?" And of course he's not kidding, and of course all Biden's cabinet picks are being gushed over by the corporate media which republicans are rightfully disgusted by, but their solution to aristocracy is monarchy, because they're even more attached to the 17th century European caste systems than the left, but the truth is all these guys are eating from the same trough: big banks, insurance, big oil, big auto, pharmaceuticals. That club doesn't fight to stop the abuses of their own membership. Almost every president we've ever had wanted one thing more than anything else: to get into that club and stay in it. That club doesn't include you and me, and that's why income, education and healthcare inequality are at unsustainable levels, that's why our criminal justice system is still a human rights catastrophe, and why we've barely begun dealing with the climate crisis, and our politics are a national joke.

We do not need any more of the right or the left sides of the white aristocracy to unite. We need to face our childhood trauma and grow up. Every lawyer who was engaged in this frivolous vexatious litigation to suppress the votes of black and brown people should be disbarred. This disinformation campaign that's killing 2000 Americans a day, it shouldn't be censured on social media, it should be prosecuted. Snake oil senators stealing our tax dollars for their paymasters during a global emergency should be prosecuted because stealing is wrong. The rule of law demands no pardons for these delinquents that briefly occupied our white house.

We can have mercy, but this is a reality check: the words "far-left" are being used to describe US domestic policy 80 years ago, and services every developed nation delivers now. We have to upgrade our institutions that are 200 years out of date if we hope to survive the century.

Now the Trumpites, they love to pretend they're protecting the roots of western society, but even a tree knows that its purpose is to keep growing. These people, they're the barbarian hordes that burned Rome to the ground. The tiki torch wavers, they had a chant: they said "you will not replace us." Well, that's exactly what we're going to do. We can heal, but only if we admit we started this whole thing broken. White America, it's time to join the 21st century. Suck it up and put a mask on. And before you start thinking we're going to split off into a blue country and a red one, NO! We're not greenlighting more pollution, or another arms race, or founding a new white terrorist nation.

Dr. King said "Either we go up together or we go down together." This culture of "every man for himself" and "winner take all" has got to go the way of the savages that we evolved from. You remember, we used to call them the Pilgrims. The path forward has been laid out for thousands of years. Your favorite book, it says it like this: you can't make money and power your master, and work toward the highest good at the same time. You got to pick one. Well, this time it's now or never. That's the challenge of our generation, and we're up for it. We were made for this, but it's going to take all our strength. In the days to come, we have to demonstrate the human values that belong to an advanced society. As long as there is a war in ourselves, there will be war in the world, so may you be in a state of peace and clarity. May you know who you are."

It was to a large extent. Liberals and social democrats, myself included, could delude ourselves into thinking that real progress had been made between 1965 and 2008. And, of course, some progress HAD been made, as we had just elected a Black President. The ferocity of the backlash, though, revealed that large percentages of the country, far, far, far more than anyone ever thought, were gripped in the psychosis of white supremacy.

"Well, we all have to go sometime." he says. Hey, if you want to take yourself out, go right ahead. The problem is that you're endangering others who don't get a say. But since your entire life has been one of self-centered greed, I guess brand consistency is your thing, pops.

My review which no one is asking for.  Very smart and full of insight but I have some criticism.

1) focus on CNN seems odd (saying they make $200 Billion in advertising profit is very wrong, maybe he meant million)
2) that Biden is a centrist is understood and what the American democratic system picked
3) The tiki torch fascists were not saying "you will not replace us".  They were chanting "Jews will not replace us." which is an important detail.  Also, they didn't mean that Jews would not replace white people with themselves.  Them meant Jews will not replace white people with Mexican people.  Get it right or leave it out.
4) The US biggest issue is anti-intellectualism which he comes close to addressing but not quite.  Also, offers not concrete solutions (e.g., teach media analysis and critical thinking skills in school)

2020-11-28 11:46:31 AM
I find it difficult to believe racism is the only motivating factor in Trump's support. If racism was the deciding factor in tilting American elections, I don't believe Obama would have won in 2008, much less also won re-election in 2012. If the idea of having a black man as president didn't inspire enough racists to vote, I don't know what could. There was something different about Trump compared to Romney and McCain.

Part of it is his celebrity. Part of it is also his image of wealth and authority, hammered home by The Apprentice. Another part of it as well was the fact that his candidacy was as much a middle finger to the GOP establishment as it was to lib stigginit.

Trump voters also go to church, listen to right wing radio, and watch right wing news channels that send clear political messages, all of them reinforcing each other again and again. A person who goes to church regularly usually has the discipline to vote regularly as well. Now, Democrats also listen to a lot of left wing viewpoints in the form of late night comedy and political news shows, and we are also used to going out to places and doing things at secular events, but that schedule and priority is often not as uniform and regular as someone who goes to church.

There was a fascinating Twitter thread a few days ago where a young woman was seeking advice on talking to her young white male friend who was expressing an opinion that society was somehow leaving him behind. I think it is important to try to understand people like that and their thinking rather than just dismiss them with easy conclusions. "Loathsome racist - end of story." I understand the temptation to do so. It's frustrating and I often think of throwing in the towel. If we truly can't communicate with each other productively, we at least need to devise a real strategy to move forward without them.

thatguyoverthere70: was expressing an opinion that society was somehow leaving him behind

I think part of the underlying reason was the creation of a "white" identity that was a fringe idea that became mainstream. Let me explain.

Decades ago, "white" did not exist as conscious group identity outside of the KKK or other such people. So-called "white" people identified more as Irish or Italian or English, or German or whatever based on their heritage. Black people could not do that because none knew exactly where in Africa their ancestors came from. So, because of circumstances, black people had a group identify thrust upon them.

In the Jewish community, we all came from different countries -- but Americans just considered us "Jews," so we had a group identity thrust upon us too. (In contrast, people from Latin America were different -- they retained identity based on their specific countries of origin. Cuban Americans are very different from Mexican Americans, and so on.)

Over time -- and for reasons I do not fully understand -- white people increasingly felt a direct, conscious "white" identity even though the word means nothing except the pigment of their skin. And as they all felt more "white," the more they felt antagonism towards everyone who was not "white."

My opinion? Racism is the fatal flaw and Achilles' Heel of the US. It was embedded in the country from the beginning. I think America's enemies -- especially Russia -- saw that fact and developed a strategy focused around blowing up racial tensions to disrupt the US from within. Their weapons of choice were social media and other online communications.

"Brainwashing. It's called brainwashing"

It's called white supremacy. Jeebus, back in 2016, there were 17 Republicans going for the nomination, all of them not really qualified to be President. Only Trump had the long history of noted racism (the Central Park Five ad, Mexicans being called murderers and rapists, the whole Obama Birther issue). And of all the candidates, you could reasonably argue that Trump was the least qualified of all of them to be President.

I'm very happy that over 80 million of my fellow Americans voted for Biden and Harris, and that four years earlier the majority of voters did choose Hillary as President. But it's annoying that people keep searching for other reasons to explain Trump's success in attracting voters, instead of choosing the most obvious.

The other thing about the election which gives me hope is that racism will carry the GOP only so far. I'm glad to be voting for candidates who will at minimum try to help all Americans and not focus on being divisive.

cherryl taggart: Chariset: He told them what they wanted to hear.

They ARE inherently superior to wimmins, queers, and colored folk, and those whiny liberals who tell them otherwise are just trying to keep them down.

And they get their "news" from Limbaugh and Hannity on the radio during the day, and Hannity, Ingraham, and Carlson on Fox "News" in the evening. If they haven't jumped ship to OAN/"News"Max by now.

Difficulty:

Of all the demographics Trump won he did WORSE with white men. He gained with all the others but lost support among white guys

This video puts it better and more succinctly than most anything I have yet seen.

No lies detected. Now what we need are capable leaders who can guide us whities out of the wilderness.

/and internet tankies who only use this info to yell at "centrists" and explain that Obama was history's real villain ain't it

It's fairly close to indoctrination.

I was farking around last night in Newsmax's Instagram comments, and came across one particularly passionate woman. Checked out her profile: suburban single mom from New Jersey, waitress, middle aged and slightly overweight.

Her posts a few years ago were your normal, boring mom shiat: dumb inspiration quotes, bad jokes, etc. Slowly they start to turn moderately political. Posts and retweets about news stories, bad things Democrats are doing, etc. Then it starts to veer into conspiracy theories. Then it intensifies. By the time the election is coming close shes manically posting things like this 5-6 times a day:

Then the MAGA march happens in Washington and she goes, posing with the Proud Boys giving white power symbols:

She's now posting comments about "loading up on ammunition" and being "locked, loaded, and ready to go." Which you can laugh off - this overweight mom is talking about being ready to go to war and kill and die, but the reality is that the Trump sphere of the internet was able to, in a few short years, take a boring, working class single mom from posting about Live, Laugh, Love bullshiat, to traveling to Washington DC with armed neo-Nazi militias saying she's ready to die for Trump.

It's absolutely terrifying.

It's not brainwashing when better information sources are just a click away on the radio, TV and on our phones. These people (I use the term loosely) aren't Winston Smith doing the Physical Jerks. They're evil creatures actively seeking out material to feed their hate, and finding it. If they weren't consuming it, they'd be creating it.

Republican Strategy still works.

LBJ was a Democrat.

Yes, but he wasn't explaining HIS strategy. Here's the context:
[Fark user image image 425x493]
Republicans have been at this since the "Southern Strategy". And it's been obvious what's behind it from the start.

He knows the context already.

Read his biography. That SOB understood politics better that anyone.
